doubt about druid companion

can a druid take any of the animals in the animal companion list as companion at level one?
or just the ones that have a level 4 improvement?

They can take ALL the animal companions. It doesn't matter if it's a level 4 or level 7 improvement, they can take anything. They still, however, get the improvements at the appropriate level (so a level 7 improvement will be received at level 7.)
