Wat do? Am I the only one annoyed by the lack of options available for creating one for table top games? I have no artistic talent whatsoever and I dislike using other people's art as my portrait (there are always little details that are overlooked/added and it just feels "wrong" using someone else's imagination for what I imagine my character looking like). I've used Hero Machine for forever, since it's free and I won't spend money on what is essentially a doodle, but its a bit limited and the 3.o version doesn't run very well on my computer. My Google-fu has failed to come up with anything better than Hero Machine for this purpose. Any other suggestions?

Although I don't work for paizo, I can give you one suggestion. Create a character portrait in a game that lets you do so (ex: Skyrim), and press Alt+ PrtSc. After that, go into a word processing program and hit Ctrl + V and it will copy your created portrait. Crop him up a bit and Voila! Your created character is done which you can print out at your leisure.

Haven't seen it yet, but I heard GuildWars 2 has a pretty in depth character creator.
Personally, I have always stolen my artwork. Mostly fron the NWN vaults for Neverwinter Nights custom portraits. They are .tga's and I usually have to do a little cropping in MS Paint before saving them as an easier file..like .jpeg or such.
Hero Machine is probably the easiest of the freeware.
You can "try" DAZ studio. Though, if you lack patience and perseverance, it may be more of a headache/hinderance than an aid. I know it was for me. :P
I guess I can sorta see your side for not wanting to use someone elses creations, I have a simmilar issue with minatures. Nothing ever seems to be exactly what you want.
But, if one lacks artistic ability to create art from immagination, the spectrum kind of goes from free to expensive rather quickly.
Friend of mine paid $300 for a custom portrait of his favorite D&D character. It hangs on the wall and is rather nice. However, that ten year campaign ended about two months after the commission was finished.

EDIT: Also, alot of times, I am looking at Renderocity or DeviantArt and the artwork gives me the idea for the character. So the concept naturally follows. Often it becomes easier to match the art with the concept then.
Skyrim's character generator is a great idea. I'll give it a shot but I already have Skyrim for the console and don't want to shell out $30-$50 for a game I already own just to port the character generator over to my PC. Dragon Age had a pretty good character generator too and it was free but, again, that didn't work well with my PC.

Solution seems simple to me. Right click on any image you intend to download from the thread, click properties, and make sure it doesn't come from www.currybear.com. If it doesn't, download it. If it does, leave it be.
Simple enough.
Personally, I use Deviant Art as a source of inspiration for artwork for characters. There's a lot of fluff and er, uhm, adult oriented works on the site, but if you put up the filters, you should be ok. A lot of the Paizo and WoTC artists have pages on the site.
Note, I'm not suggesting use this as a resource for stealing artwork to put into things you sell. But if you just want something you can point at and say 'Hey, my archer looks like that guy!' it's a great resource. I keep my laptop up at games, and pull up the pics and show them to the players for NPCs they meet.
As a graphic designer, I know that, that is not cheap. Most (good) artists charge around a hundred bucks for a single portrait.
If I had that kind of dough to throw around on something as frivolous as a character portrait, I may not have become a roleplayer (one of the most cost effective hobbies around) in the first place.
There are a lot of great artists on DeviantArt who will perform commissions for below $100 and in some cases below $50. I recently had a character commission completed by an artist in Poland for a mere $30! While she didn't understand English very well, a few hours making simplifying my writing to ensure my description could make the 'round-trip' from English to Polish to English in Google Translate. In the end, this resulted in a pretty damn good rendition by the artist.

Good luck, and put some time into finding photos of models who resemble your character's features, poise, posture, etc. as many artists I've spoken to find that helpful.
