Trample?

Rules Questions

So through a series of events that aren't important, my character is going to get a cohort cavalier, who's non-normal mount comes with the trample ability.

I'm iffy on mounted combat to begin with, but I'm really curious how this works. Namely, can the mount trample and my cohort still get his attack at the end, like he could if the mount was just moving normally? Can the trample be part of the cohort's charge?

I know normally if my cohort had the trample feat he could have the mount trample as part of an overrun combat maneuver. Since it says overrun can be done as part of a charge, does that mean you can overrun one target in your charge against another? And if so, would the monster's natural trample ability function the same way?

Just looking for some clarification before I sit down with the DM and figure out what is or isn't legal with my cohort's primary class abilities.

Yes, it is important. I want to know if you got a little doggy or a giant dragon of doom and sadness. :P

AFAIK, the Mount and the Mounter are treated as separate entities, meaning they have their own standard and move actions. (There are obviously some quirks with this, but I don't need to get into those details.) Because of this, the mount can perform the Overrun Charge maneuver with Trample going as worded, and the mounter is allowed a single attack (as one of the rules mentioned in Mounted Combat is that when the mount moves, the mounter is treated as though they moved for combat actions).

I would still bring it up and talk with your GM about it, because even if RAW allows the abilities and such to function, (s)he may not allow it for balance/flavor issues, etc. I mean, you are allowed to talk with him about stuff to see if he would allow it, right?

If you must know, it's a game with lots of constructs and clockwork creatures, and I built myself a construct metal horse with trample. The DM ruled that, as long as I built a cavalier archetype focused around mechanical instead of flesh-and-blood horses, I could have my new cohort ride my construct into battle.

Then I don't see why not. If the creature has Trample, putting a character on the mount shouldn't affect the rider or the mount at all. Even so, all it takes is a basic Ride and/or Handle Animal/Knowledge (Engineering) [since it's a construct] check, which is pretty simple once you get past the first few levels.
