I think it depends upon job the person was performing and circumstances of retiring (is s/he retiring and goes for a well earned pension or is that retirement from that kind of job and reorienteering oneself for something completely new?)
A happy ending as you bid the person farewell.
A fishing pole or golf clubs if its a man trust me he probably does one or the other.
A Resume! If someone is retiring, there might be a job opening!
If they were in my area, I would also get them a copy of the NY-NJ Trail Confrence walk book. It is a book that has every hiking trail in the area. Find out what your local version is. Get out of the office and into the woods!
