How to hide magic auras on a person?

Advice

At first level we have magic aura to make our equipment appear non-magic. There doesn't seem to be anything until the 8th level mind blank that can hide the magical auras on your person. Am I missing something or is there really no way to stop someone from noticing that the bird watching them from across the way has a distinct aura of beast shape III?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The spell you want is Mask Dweomer from the APG. The Communal version of the spell is only a level higher.

I believe there was some debate on if Non-detection could accomplish this.

Mask Dweomer is certainly an interesting addition, although only being accessible to witches limits my options for using it.

Nondetection seems to do what I had in mind, I'll run it past my GM.

You could always research a Sor/Wiz version of the spell. It's first level so it should be relatively cheap, and the research DC should only be around 22.

Sovereign Court

Nondetection works great but is kind of expensive. That protects you from Detect Magic plus a ton of other things.

Plus Detect Magic doesn't tell you that a creature is under a specific spell effect, you can detect the school of magic of an aura. So they could see a bird under transmutation magic which could be so many things. Maybe a dragon was Baleful Polymorphed, or a paladin. Maybe someone cast Cat's Grace on it. All the detection spell would do is point out that there was something odd about something odd.

Silver Crusade

Wear a lead coat.

There is Misdirection too:

Misdirection

School illusion (glamer); Level bard 2, sorcerer/wizard 2

Casting Time 1 standard action

Components V, S

Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)

Target one creature or object, up to a 10-ft. cube in size

Duration 1 hour/level

Saving Throw none or Will negates; see text; Spell Resistance no

By means of this spell, you misdirect the information from divination spells that reveal auras (detect evil, detect magic, discern lies, and the like). On casting the spell, you choose another object within range. For the duration of the spell, the subject of misdirection is detected as if it were the other object. Neither the subject nor the other object gets a saving throw against this effect. Detection spells provide information based on the second object rather than on the actual target of the detection unless the caster of the detection succeeds on a Will save. For instance, you could make yourself detect as a tree if one were within range at casting: not evil, not lying, not magical, neutral in alignment, and so forth. This spell does not affect other types of divination magic (augury, detect thoughts, clairaudience/clairvoyance, and the like).

The only problem is who or what is the target of this spell. I.e. the target is the creature that benefit from the spell, and so he is the guy that get the Illusion (glamer) aura or the target is the object/creature whose aura is duplicated and so he has Illusion (glamer) aura that get duplicated?

I go for the first interpretation , so if you select a tree as the source of you new aura you get a "no magic" aura-

You also have to remember the limitations on Detect Magic.

Range of 60'
Is across the way more than 60'? Can the changed watcher follow/observe/scout/etc.. from more than 60'? If so, they simply stay far enough away to be out of the range of the spell, or simply move off a bit when the caster cast the spell, and then stops concentrating a few minutes later.

Interfering auras
Is anyone with magic on them between the caster and the changed watcher? Then the caster will detect magic, but unless they spend more time observing, they will not know that there is a bit of additional magic on the far side of their magic dripping team mate.

Arc
The spell detects in an arc, not as a radius. That means that if the changed watcher can stay out of the arc, they are safe from detection.
