I have a PC who is looking to make an enchantress with a minor in illusion, rather liking the idea of someone who manipulates rather than engages herself. She's asked me about some of the spells and I admit that I'm at a loss...
Charm Person vs. Suggestion
Functionally these spells seem to operate basically the same, except that Charm Person is a 1st level spell while Suggestion is a 3rd and Suggestion generally has a very narrow focus whereas Charm Person could provide a variety of benefits (a specific request vs. being amenable to any number of them). I don't really know where the two differ and I certainly can't explain the level difference between them.
Hideous Laughter vs. Hold Person
Hideous Laughter - a 2nd level spell - allows for two saving throws before a target is 'committed' to enduring its duration whereas a victim of the Hold Person spell gets a save every round despite the spell being of a higher level. Again, I can't think of a reason to reccomend one over the other.
Any insight or nuance that I'm missing out on?

Being paralyzed is drastically much more detrimental to someone then being prone and unable to act. It makes the target helpless, subject to a lot of dangerous things. Hold Person has the saves every round because it's such a powerful spell. Plus medium versus close range is going for it too.
Suggestion can force actions on people them being charmed allows them to use their discretion, though in certain situations one spell is better then the other.
