Do you feel lucky punk?

Advice

Me again--helping my party build characters for S&S.

The fourth member needs to fill something in the rogue-ish slot. (find, disable traps, at least) He's got a concept of being an Inspector Cluseau-ish, High Intelligence/ Low Wisdom/ Lucky Character.

I've gotten as far as suggesting the archaeologist/bard class. He doesn't really want the perform abilities, and the knowledge boosts are otherwise lacking in our group. So that's a fit so far.

With a 25 point build we've got...

S 10
Dx 15
Con 10
W 8
I 16
Cha 16

Suggestions?

Now we need help with Race (Gnome? Halfling? Elf? Other suggestions?)

Feats and Traits? (More emphasis on luck than combat)

Multiclassing to head towards later?

Any lucky suggestions welcome.
Thanks.

Am I the only one who was expecting a grizzled gunslinger from the title of this thread?

Liberty's Edge

Well, if he wants melee skills, Weapon Finesse is a must, Feat-wise. If going ranged, Point-Blank Shot is a necessity.

Race-wise, I always like Human, though Halfling would also work quite well. As would Elf, actually. Especially if going the archer route.

Trait-wise, I'd go with Vagabond Child for Disable Devic as a class skill, and Indomitable Faith for some extra Will Save, though Reactionary might also work if you care more for Initiative than Will.

Stat wise...I'd go something more like this:

Str 12
Dex 16
Con 12
Int 14
Wis 7
Cha 16

Int 14 is more than enough to be quite smart enough as an Archaeologist, and the extra physical stuff would be really helpful.

Sorry to mislead. The title emphasis was supposed to be on "lucky" not "dirty" or "hairy." Although a lucky grizzled gunslinger is a good thought too.

@ deadmanwalking. Nice suggestions especially about vagabond child, since lack of disable device was a problem.

I had thought about an Inquisitor of the Luck Domain, but we needed some rogue skills. The idea of a fanatical evangelical idealogue of Luck was really amusing to consider. "You are poor, unattractive, and unwashed. Clearly the gods do not favor you. You must die for the betterment of the fortunes of all Golarion."

Ringworld is hazy in my memory, but wasn't there something about breeding humans for their luck?

Scarab Sages

Archeologist is good... but for something different...

How about a Sorcerer with the Seeker archetype for trapfinding, with the Sage bloodline to use Intelligence instead of Charisma? You'd get to have Intelligence as your highest stat, have trapfinding (and Disable Device as a class skill), and could pick spells based on luck. And going human, you could pick the new human feats based on luck. I wouldn't recommend having a negative Wisdom, simply because that lowers your Perception checks, but feel free to take it as a dump stat and apply it to another stat if need be. Don't know how much your party needs knowledge, but if Bluff is covered then tossing that and the Silver Tongued alternate you can put in another Knowledge skill (switching out Survivor for a trait granting it as a class skill). If you do so, you'd get another skill point freed up by losing Sense Motive too if that's covered. I just felt Bluff and Diplomacy might be fitting for an inspector, even a bumbling one (Sense Motive too, but that really clashes with clueless detectives).

Str 8 [-2]
Dex 16 [10]
Con 12 [2]
Int 16+2 [10]
Wis 12 [2]
Cha 13 [3]
Alternate Racial Trait: Silver Tongued (+2 Diplomacy/Bluff, can raise attitude by 3 instead of 2) - instead of Skilled racial trait
Favored Class: Skills, but at 4th level and onward bonus 1st level spells known
Skills: Perception +6 (+6 vs traps), Disable Device +7 (+8 vs traps), Spellcraft +10, Knowledge-Arcana +10, Knowledge (Local) +8, Bluff +8, Diplomacy +7
Traits: Eyes and Ears of Abadar (Perception +1/ Class Skill), Extremely Fashionable (wearing 150gp+ clothes/jewelry= +1 Bluff/Intimidate/Diplomacy-Class Skill)
Feats: Defiant Luck, Inexplicable Luck
Abilities: Arcane Blast 7/day (1d4 force damage, increases by 1 every two levels)
Spells: 1st: True Strike, Grease (very Cluseau-esque to have people falling down... although I admit it usually would be him)
0th: Prestidigitation, Detect Magic, Ghost Sound, Light
Carry around a crossbow, and use it to do trick shots with True Strike (cutting a rope to have something fall on someone's head, for instance... usually Cluseau's...)

Scarab Sages

Another option is just playing a wizard- some good luck options in the Foresight school, and you could arcane bond with a magnifying glass (skinned as a wand, that you could at level 5 enchant to hold True Strike or some other lucky spell without having to get the craft wand feat)

It could work with the Abadar trait for Perception and the before mentioned Disable Device trait, and then just load up on Knowledge skills.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Excellent ideas Adam! It might even work to dual him as bard/sorcerer-- since they're both cha dependent. We don't really need him as party face since we've got an Aasimar Oracle Cha 20 for that. I see her as the shining diplomat, and him as the affable, absentminded one that everyones fond of, in spite of wanting to kick him overboard sometimes.

And I like the magnifying glass/wand idea if we go the wizard direction. Brilliant.

Although, now my mind is filling with ideas of a longsuffering Kato-like familiar too.

Great feat, bloodline and school suggestions. Thanks!

+1

Scarab Sages

Glad to offer suggestions! Another option for race if you like the human luck feats is half-elf. You could have him start with skill focus in Perception, and with the +2 racial on top of that, you could get away with a lower wisdom and still have an effective searcher. You'd have to check with the GM, but I believe the majority of folk say half-elves and half-orcs can take human feats and traits. Or if you like human, an alternate racial feature gives you skill focus thrice (at 1st, 8th, and 15th level I believe) in exchange for the bonus feat.
