Area Spell Target

Rules Questions

Area Spells like sleep might affect everybody (including the PCs and friendly NPCs) or I choose who will be affected?

4 HD of creatures (when HD=d6) means 4x6 or 4d6?

HD means levels (for PCs/NPCs), and the number before the "d6", "d10", etc. for monsters.

For PCs/NPCs, it means it can't affect anyone with more than 4 levels, and can only affect characters with a total of 4 levels combined.

The spell is very specific about how it affects those within the area: It affects those with the lowest number of HD (= lowest amount of levels) first. If there's a tie, it affects those closest to the spell's point of origin first.

You misunderstand the HD limit. It has nothing to do with whether a given creature's HD are d6, d8, or whatever. It has to do with how many HD are possessed by creatures in the area.

If the area includes (for example) a 1st-level fighter, a 2nd-level cleric, and a 3rd-level wizard; then a spell with a limit of 4HD wouldn't be able to affect them all. The fighter has 1 HD, the cleric has 2, and the wizard has 3. The spell could affect the fighter and the cleric (3 HD total), the fighter and the wizard (4 HD total), but not the cleric and the wizard (5 HD total).

Make sense?

EDIT: Ninja'd.

It makes sense now! However just to be sure:

1. It means that it has the potential to sleep my friends in the area if they meet the level and position requirements

2. "Come upon 4 HD of creatures" it’s a very obscure (but short and efficient) way to say: the sum of all the affected creatures levels have to be 4 or less.

Yes on both counts :)

Thank you masters! :)
