What exactly can Lesser Restoration dispel?

Rules Questions

Lesser restoration states;

"Lesser restoration dispels any magical effects reducing one of the subject's ability scores or..."

Which I see as intended to dispel things like Ray of Enfeeblement.

However then it gets odd.

Beast Shape II (Large creature) gives a -2 penalty to dexterity, so I assume this can be also be dispelled, - as would a whole host of other polymorph effects. Wildshape is Supernatural so not vulnerable to Dispel Magic, I'm guessing Supernatural powers are not vulnerable to any form of dispelling?

Magical Grappled effects? Entanglement effects?

What about paralysis? That reduces your Dexterity to 0. Sleep?

The Int/Cha decrease from casting Contact Other Plane?

Reincarnate (as say, an elf) is instantaneous so I'm guessing that's safe. Feeblemind lists specific spells that can end it and Bestow Curse specifically states it can't be dispelled so both are out as well.

Touch of Idiocy reduces three of the targets ability scores but I'm going to assume the 'one of' means one or more, not only one.

Thoughts?

No One?

My thoughts on what is best for play;

No to polymorph effects (though should there be a spell of the polymorph school that is intended as an ability score debuff out there somewhere, that would be okay).

No to effects that apply a condition that in turn applies an ability penalty.

Yes to the penalty from Contact Other Plane - it's such a dire spell perhaps this might tempt someone to ever take it.

Yes to Touch of Idiocy and other multi-stat debuffs.

hmm, not thought about this. marking the thread to see what others think too.

Could you use it to cure Baleful Polymorph ?

Sovereign Court

Using Lesser restoration to end someone's beast shape should not be allowed. The spell is not baleful, and the penalty is offset to the bonuses recieved.

Actually By the reading he may be correct. I always looked at this spell in terms of the 1d4 stat damage healing. But that said it takes 3 rounds to cast it which basically makes it uselesss in combat.

As for baleful polymorph no. Because BF doesnt actualy give you a template as far as i know it basically re-writes what you are. It problyu also specifically lists what can remove it but i havent looked.

anyhow never thought of using it to cure Ray of enfeeblement though.

I agree that the 3 round casting time does impact on it's combat use (Though there's been plenty of occasions that removing a penalty from another party member, even if it took 3 rounds, would be more effective than the other options) it still has combat potential if you're going to ambush someone you know has a power like this running or if you are going to run straight though into the next encounter.

I agree that LR *shouldn't* remove Beast Shape but it kind of looks like it does.

marked it for FAQ, not that it's asked frequently, but it is an interesting question.
It might even be intended to dispel beast shape as it would then "restore" the body to its real form.

Baleful polymorph is not an "instant" spell, but a "permanent" spell, this means that it can be dispelled by a dispel magic like any other "permanent" spell. Other than the second save (will) to make it ugly, it is just like someone cast Beast Shape III to change someone into a Small or smaller animal of no more than 1 HD.

so, yep, it pretty much gives you a template just like beast shape.

As an aside the 3 round casting time does make potions of Lesser Restoration a really worthwhile investment.
