Rune Giant question

Rise of the Runelords

I have not played RotRL, but am planning on getting it, i am curious if you fight a rune giant towards the end of the game. I'd like to know because i might need the Figure from WizKids

Yes, there are Rune Giants in the later modules. As long as the party is cautious, they should not encounter more than one at a time. So one mini should cover you.

Or you could play with the equivalent of one of my groups ... and face off against 3 ...

In my game, the party of 6 PCs has faced off against a pair of rune giants three times. The first time it was just the rune giants, and the spark showers alone nearly TPK'd the group. I fabricated a reasonable excuse not to use the sparks in the second encounter. The third time it was two rune giants plus Khalib, and even with the giants very seriously underperforming (again, no sparks) it was the closest the group's come to complete annihilation.

One rune giant with really good armor is more than enough.

I may be wrong, but I can swear I read that you could fight a maximum of 6 of them.

Anyone can confirm?

I'll need to find good proxies for them... Sadly

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I just reviewed my copy of the RotR hardcover, and no single encounter has more than one rune giant listed. The only way to fight more than one at a time is to trigger two encounters involving rune giants at the same time or if the DM rolls a random rune giant encounter on the encounter table. (One entry is '1d3 rune giants')

In the original version of Spires of Xin Shalast, there were eight total, grouped in encounters of 2 and 6.

And you guys really use that mini for these occasions? He's really expensive...

See if you can get your local game store to sell it to you at cost. $40 is hefty for a single mini, but it is well worth it!

But what if you need more of them? I can buy one for sure(they're awesome) but 4-6 is too much.....

I think if I had to, I would prepare some 4'x4' cardboard squares and tape them to the bottom of a few Huge-size giants as stand-ins. I don't know if even I would spend the money for a squad of rune giants. (The nice thing about having different looking minis for each monster is it helps you track which ones have taken damage.)

Well, guess I'll have to try out... And live pretending that I have 5 of those badboys on the table.

Thx for everything.

That looks badass, alas I will be using paper tokens for mine.

Pictures do not do it justice. I was super pleased that my FLGS had one.

You shouldn't need more than one playing the Anniversary Edition. If you were using the 3.5 version you could run into multiple ones, but they were of a lower CR than the Pathfinder version.

I hoped my (small) FLGS was going to get one - if they did, they would have kept it for me. But, unfortunately, their miniature order didn't include one.

Last Friday I showed up for PFS at a different store, and they had two Rune Giants on the counter. One of them left with me ...

Our group fought six of them at once when playing through 3.5 RotR; for what it's worth.

What did you use for minis?

I seem to recall a RotRL blog post with pictures of their table as they were playing, with the gargantuan Orcus used as a proxy for the Rune giant. That was what I was planning to do until they announced the set.

The anniversary edition as written only has the PCs ever facing one (1) rune giant at a time. You can end up facing 2-4 Storm Giants at a time, but the Rune Giant encounters, as written, are only one at a time.

Now of course there are any number of changes a GM can make, and I likely will add in more if PCs need it for an appropriate challenge.
