In combat repartee

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

So... how common is it in your games for someone in the party (or yourself) to engage in repartee during combat itself?

If so, what are some of your favorite exchanges?

In our last session my ranger was fighting a nasty but beautiful female skirmisher who was putting up quite a fight. In spite of the dangerous situation my ranger could not help but admire the skills of his adversary. So he began a conversation with her during combat.

Some snippets from the fight:

Ranger: "Such skill is rare, it is an honor to meet such a worthy adversary."

Her: "You shall die here!"
Ranger: "Death is no dishonor against such skill, but you have yet to take my measure."

Her, attempting to flee: "We shall meet again!"
Ranger: "I shall seek you out in the fields of eternal battle, for our dance in this life ends now!"

Her, dying: "...urgle......"
Ranger: "Would that we had met in a different time, a different place..."

I try to come up with something expressing my character's personality in every fight. In some cases it's just him flicking his cigar at someone, or insulting their ancestry.

I have to admit, he has a tendency to flirt with his female adversaries though...

Grand Lodge

*sigh* My players don't do enough of it. I try to inject a bit of dialogue, but it rarely gets taken up.

The best I've ever seen was the infamous paladin massacre. I've detailed it elsewhere, but a player mutiny was organized by myself and two other players when one of them was allowed to guest DM for the weekly game. Long story short, we wanted a TPK to contrast the 'yeah you're unconscious' soft-balling from the previous months.

My elven Scout/Paladin made plenty of comments on the hopelessness of the battle to my friend's Rogue/Paladin(secretly turned Blackguard). My friend played along beautifully with cryptic comments about how he 'wasn't worried'.

Other than that, the repartee is mostly limited to before battle joshing.

My witch is far more colorful in combat. He specializes in creative insults and does his best to enrage his adversaries.

Unfortunately the campaign he is in so far has been mostly against animals, monsters or humanoids speaking other languages. So he's gotten sort of frustrated and ended up trying to make the party laugh.

We had a fight against a giant crawfish so he asked the party ranger to go start a big pot of boiling water and asked the party sorcerer how spicy his prestidigitation spell could get...

The party did eat well that night....
