I am new to tabletop RPGs, mostly. I've been around for quite a while, owning the old Basic and Expert D&D sets, and AD&D books from editions 1 through 3, I believe. I have played CRPGs from the days of Wizardy, Bard's Tale, Ultima, etc., and have played a number of MMORPGs. However, I have never actually played any tabletop game.
In my youth, I tried. I really wanted to. Like I said, I bought the sets and the books! The problem was, nobody I knew played. And when I did meet those that wanted to, nobody had a clue HOW to, so nothing ever happened. I even joined a club back in high school, and I think we met two or three times, and it fell through. We never even played once!
Flash forward to now. I'm married, and moved to a new town (hell, a new country!) and it seems the town I live in has a gaming group, and they play Pathfinder! Or, they DID play, but now, they only play Magic and Warhammer. I don't want to play those, I want to play something like D&D or Pathfinder, but no, they don't really do that anymore, because nobody really wants to.
So, here I sit, with my Pathfinder Core Rulebook, with nobody to play with. At this point, I don't know if I'd even be any good, but still, I would love to give it a shot.
I have looked through the forums here, and noticed that people do play online, when they can't do it in person, for whatever reason. I see that they use Skype or Vent or TeamSpeak to do so, along with some RPG specific whiteboard type apps (which I haven't downloaded yet, but I plan to, cause they sound rather cool.)
My question is, how likely am I to find a group that would be willing to have someone that has never played before? I understand the basics, obviously, but I really don't know how I would do in a real game, and would love to find people that would be a little more patient. I'd also want to start at the beginning, level 1, and learn as I go. I know some people start new games (encounters? adventures? not sure what exactly you would say here) but start off as higher level, and I'm not really looking for that.
Sorry about the giant wall of text here, but I wanted to try and get down most of what I was thinking. If anybody could point me where I should go, or is someone that wants to start something new, and doesn't mind a complete newbie coming along, who may ask a few questions here and there, please let me know!
I'd love to play, would love to get involved, and hope that the community out there can help!
Thank you in advance!

I have tons of free time on my hands and would love to join an online game. Maptool is what I have the most experience with and could help out any group using it.
I don't mind playing with someone brand new, as I am rather new myself! Anyone else interested?
I would love to play Skull and Shackles or Kingmaker, but anything is good!

Also new to pathfinder and looking for group that accepts brand news. I can do skype + maptools at Fri, SAT & SUN night. I would love to play the rise of the runelords as PC. But anything else is fine.
Thanks!
BTW, I'm on PST time.

I'm initialy interested in this project. Slightly intimidated because I do not have any experience with hosting an online game. Would like to play as a PC but I'm willing to GM the sessions if nobody else offers. Never used maptools but I did visit the site and read what it is about. Would require help from those that are experienced with the mapping tool. If anyone can answer this, I'm curious how long it generally takes to recreate a map from the module over to maptools? I can run any adventure path the group decides upon. I would however recommend not running Rise of the Runelords, until the updated version is available later this month. I'm don't pretend to know all of the rules but I learn what I can. I currently GM a tabletop version of Skull & Shackles AP Sunday evenings. I have run Curse of the Crimson Throne and Legacy of Fire in the past. Friday or Saturday evenings could work for me as of right now. I'm on Eastern Time. I'm thinking 9-10 pm to start for a projected 4 hour session, but open to any suggestions or concerns with everyone regarding the time difference.

Heya Xeno! Don't feel too bad, I'm slightly intimidated myself, having never had any experience playing any tabletop. ;) Hence why I was looking for people that wouldn't mind someone completely new playing.
From looking at what people have said so far, it looks like Saturday night would be the easiest for everybody. A 4 hour session, starting around 9-10pm Eastern, works for me.
I guess the technical stuff would need to be worked out, like how we would communicate. I'm used to using Ventrilo with MMOs, and have never used Skype, so I'm not sure if you can have a group of 5 or so people on Skype at one time. Also, I'm not familiar with MapTool either, but I downloaded it, and will be taking a look at it.
I'm open to any module, to be honest. Whatever everybody decides on works for me. I will say I like the whole goblins and orcs and whatever settings best, but I'm game for anything.

There is a chat function on the map tools. Does anybody know if it is type or voice? Will try to familiarize myself with it by watching the tutorial videos.
Everyone, send me an email and link a facebook profile if you have one to tpkoch@gmail.com with a subject line Virtual Game-Pathfinder . I can setup a private fb group. From there I can start a poll on AP votes, list all playable races 35+, and collect more general information from everyone that is still on board.

Xeno,
MapTool chat is text.
I've installed version 1.3b84 (the stable release version linked on the launch page at http://www.rptools.net/index.php?page=launch) and can run a private server if needed.
Email on the way.
Yorgi
Thanks Yorgi
I will get things sorted out and set up tonight when I get home from work. Probably won't be able to launch it for a week or two since we still have alot of player options and feedback to get through.

Xeno. I haven't been able to participate in PFS there yet. Wednesday's at 7 are kinda difficult, I work in Ann Arbor.
I believe they have an event tomorrow. Read something to that effect on fb and they have a link to a rpg michigan site for events with specific run times for Pathfinder at Warriors 3.

Ive watched a few livestreams and listened to several podcasts that use skype to play. The quality on average is decent but every once in awhile it has a tendency to get a little choppy or mechanical sounding.
There are 2 main reasons people use it though, most people already have it and its free. A vent server would be better ofc but skype is usually quite servicable.
Also saturday late night would work just fine for me.

thanks for your help xenomorph 27
No Problem. Found some things that I had read a few days ago.
This link will show you all of the events still open for tomorrow at Warriors 3.Michigan Pathfinder Society
This one is for all of the society events in Souteast MI. If anything you can sign up to get email alerts for what nights games are being hosted near your area. Pathfinder Society Events SE MI

Skype can do basically everything vent can do, so no problem there.
But yeah sound serviceable! I am very interested in playing a Rogueish character, maybe a bard for whatever we are doing, but I am flexible! I'd love to try Skull and Shackles but what are you guys interested in?
Xeno, Map tools is pretty easy itself, as for maps usually you can just upload the whole map from the source material (Screen shot of the PDF, or using any JPGs you have if its available) right to it and use the actual map as the background. Sometimes its a little tricky to line the grid up perfectly depending on how you got the image but its usually not a big deal. I can provide any assistance with it, even running the server if need be. Or even making basic macros (all optional)

Thank you TheRonin for that incredibly useful information. That would be the most time efficent technique right there. Screen shot of the pf source map would be optimal for me. To be fair, I don't have any issues running a bigger group if thats okay for all of you. 4-6 is fine. The only drawback would be the amount of time during rounds while everyone is waiting for there turn, if that is something you would focus on.

4-6 sounds great!
let me know the campaign basics so I can come up with an awesome character !

the screenshot thing never occurred to me great idea. ive used this somepdf to pretty good effect. not only does it grab the maps it also grabs the character pics to make it easy to make tokens with maptool.
also im open to any class, i have no preference really so whatever the group needs ill make.

Wow, Xeno, thanks for all this! Looks like it's coming together. I will send you my info via email.
Now, this may be a good time to announce that I will be unavailable July 28th and August 4th, as I will be out of the country. Other than those two, Saturdays are a go for me.
Would this be an every week thing? I'm guessing it would be, but I know that things come up (like my trip in a couple of weeks) so what would be done on those days that people may not be able to show up?

It looks like you have lots of PC Candidates already, but if you have room for one more, I'd be interested. My TT game of 10 years looks like its dying because of silly RL getting in the way.
I'm a very experienced role player, but have no problem playing with newbs, if they are really psyched to play. (I've had my fill of girlfriends/wives following their sig other to the game and not bothering to learn the rules in 10 years, but people who really want to play-- thats a completely different matter.)
I'm a newb myself when it comes to the tech we'd be using, but I'm a reasonably fast learner.
My preferences are... games that emphasize role playing. Some combat is good, but I enjoy character interaction. Otherwise why not MMORP? I prefer non-evil games. Chaotic selfish is fine. I just don't like cruelty and betrayal for kicks. I like playing divine casters and rogues. I can also play arcane casters and bards in a pinch. either S&S or Kingmaker would be great. Sat nites late is usually fine for me, EST.
If all of the above doesn't fit with what you're planning, not a prob. But I just thought its good to get an idea if I'm a good fit for your game, up front.
This is starting to sound like a classified: Single female divine caster seeks party for moonlit shanghaiing on the beach.

Hey Apocalypso! If you send Xenomorph an email at tpkoch@gmail.com with a subject line Virtual Game-Pathfinder and your Facebook profile, he can invite you to the Facebook group we have going.
I'll admit, I've never done much in the way of role playing, but wouldn't mind trying my hand at it, hence one of the reasons why I'm looking to get into this. I've just played so many CRPGs and MMOs that I finally decided to really try and find a group to play a tabletop with. After so many years, I figured it's time. ;)
