I am running a Kingmaker Campaign, and one of my players wanted to have his Cohort take leadership.
I ruled that he couldn't. I'm pretty sure that I ruled correctly, I was wondering if my interpretation was backed by the rules?

I don't know that I'd have had a problem with a Cohort with Leadership.
Say the PC is level 9, so the Cohort is level 7, and then their Cohort is level 5. Big deal.
Not to mention that with enough other bonuses from CHA and such, the PC himself could have a 5th level follower even.
What amazing things does a 5th level cohort bring to the table? Certainly nothing to make adventuring safe, since the party is 9th level. Maybe an item creation feat?

Considering this is a Mingmaker campaign, maybe I will amend my answer.
It is certainly "legal" by RAW, and in most campaigns, i don't see any harm.
Kingmaker, well maybe that is different. With a use of Leadership, one can crank out one more NPC with a super high stat (most likely CHA, but it can be something else) to sit as one of the realm's rulers. That could be unbalancing under the Kingmaker mechanics.
Still, GMs always have the option of disallowing Leadership.
