In The News: 3rd Grader Strip Searched by Asst. Principal

Here for the story...
Sound off.

Did they not look for the money at all before the search? They said it was found under the table...

I know! When I had money stolen from me in school, the principal told me I should have been more careful with my money.

Okay, so the kid who found the money the girl dropped the first time, and gave it back to her becomes the prime suspect? How does that work?

"Overzealous" is a bit of an understatement. It was $20. All they had to go on were the accusations of other students. I'm with the mother on this one. This shouldn't have happened for such a minor incident. I'm also disturbed that it is within the administrator's authority to strip search children.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

If low-level government employees arent allowed to strip search children, then the terrorists have already won.

Fun fact from my teacher training: Principals do not have the legal authority to conduct a strip search. In the very unlikely event one is actually needed, they're supposed to call the cops.

But every few years we get another story of some functionary that thinks forcing kids to strip is within his power.

According to that news report, the school board seems to think that that the principal was acting within the bounds of her authority. If you're right, that whole system needs a shaking down, because they're operating without knowing what they can and can't legally do.

Could that law differ by state, Samnell? What state did this happen in? I can't find it.

for CNN's coverage of it.

The link is from WRAL, a station in Raleigh, NC.

I'm not a lawyer. I know it's against the law in MI. If NC has some kind of law giving teachers or principals that kind of authority, that would be both horrific and sadly unsurprising.

I removed a post. I think we can treat the serious threads seriously.

Okay, apparently CNN is random as to which news broadcast videos they post. The original incident happened at Athena Middle School, which is in NY state.

So there were two incidents of this? The broadcast I see says Union Elementary School in Sampson County.

EDIT: The Athena Middle School incident was an elderly bus monitor being bullied by some boys who filmed it and put it on YouTube.
