Try googling for 'pavise'. As for rules, I would say it's something like a tower shield that cannot be wielded as a shield due to the awkwardness of the support struts that make it stand up (no shield bonus, but still penalises attacks when carried), and may be placed as terrain as a move action. Give it hardness and hit points as a tower shield.

Was looking for something portable and easy to deploy that wasn't magical and did not hinder a ranged character beyond maybe 1 action (move or standard). Essentially was looking for something akin to the previously mentioned pavise, but there seems to be a lack of options besides using a poor animal or a large wheeled device in PF.

is it not just sad that bar tables and canoes and magically animated stuff would work better in PF rules than a specific type of shield. either way the non magic part BBT was to see if it could be done as there is about 50 kajillion ways to make cover with magic, whereas in the mundane world its all canoes and bar tables if you don't have tower shield prof.

If spells are allowed, go for a permanent animate object or permanent shrink object. Most anything would make good cover.
My favorite was a wizard who created a giant conical wizard's hat that was bigger than he was. He cast permanent shrink item on it and wore it around. When he stumbled into an antimagic field, it would dispel and return to its normal size, dropping around him and breaking line of effect to the antimagic field. He would then teleport to safety.
