This came up in my group, and it seemed to stump everyone so I'm throwing it to you guys.
When Faction leaders appear in a scenario and they are outside of the society, do regular people know what they do? Is it common knowledge that the Paracountess or Coulson Madris is responsible for for every Cheliax/Andoran pathfinder? Or does everyone just know they're influential, but they're not sure how?

It is known that Faction Leaders are influential sponsors of Pathfinders. To what aims they are working towards in sponsoring them is more unknown outside of that particular faction.
Why they're influential is dependent on the faction. The Paracountess is a noble and a diplomat. Maldris is an effective military leader. The Qadiran guy (bad with names, sorry) is wealthy and well connected, and so on.

I used to think that only your faction leader was known to you, until first steps that is. If you have played it, than you know that you go around and meet them, and they are open, about coming back to them, for extra work.
Now how much they are involved, only those whom work for them should know I would think.
