So I am a solo player looking to run two characters, the campaign has definite steampunk/shadowrun/classic frp flavor. I've decided to go with a Guntank gunslinger and a vanilla alchemist as the sidekick, not sure what race to pick and we are doing a 40 point buy any suggestions, sample builds? I will also be starting at 4th level.

okay, I get tiefling for the intelligence bonus, heres a bit more background on the campaign idea: the guntank is a Dwarf rifleman from the mana wastes fleeing the ruins of his shattered military unit, the alchemist, his sidekick and combat buddy, was the groups demolitions/trapspringer specialist. Both characters will be grizzled combat veterans(think vietnam combat veteran)with a double dose of post traumatic stress disorder. they are fleeing to Absalom from a traitor with an iron golem to establish themselves as mercs/black ops types.

Okay now lets say until advanced races is released (say next month I believe) that we will only be using core races plus some of the available races from bestiaries 1-3, i.e no variant tieflings. Alsso not partial to goblins, what else do you think would be good as a companion for a dwarf? Half-orc, half-elf,human? I like these for the possible +2 int and they all have features beneficial to an alchemist with few if any drawbacks.

Same thing, core tiefling, same flavor suggested.
Ratfolk and Wayang are a good choices as well.
pretty sure he's talking about the stuff out of the player's handbook, not out of the bestiary right?
Anyway, half-orc and elf are strong choices. Gnome isn't bad.
Elf gets the +2 to int and dex which is just awesome for an alchemist, but the -2 con just hurts.
The Half-orc favored class bonus is great for the bomb damage, since you'll be starting off at 4th, that's an extra 2 points of damage, start's to really add up when you consider splash damage.
With the gnome favored class option gives more bombs, yay more bombs, and you can take pyromaniac alternate racial to increase bomb damage progression (meh, fits the theme).
I'd recomend the half orc, you're really not going to need that much dex, 16 will do fine and you're getting 40 point buy, that's huge, you can easily get 20 int there. Consider giving him a level of fighter so he can wear heavy armor and get an extra (combat) feat
