I didn't pay any attention to this when it was first in the news, frankly because I'd seen MB's tech, which relies on sensors in the roads, and remained fairly unimpressed.
I just saw a demo of Google's car: spectacular; in a word.
It uses laser tech to continuously scan the road, meaning it can operate anywhere.

Good luck trying to get insurance for the first generation car.
I'll be interesting to see how Google get around all the liability. I suspect it'll just be a glorified "autopilot" for when you're on the freeway. Probably long-hall Truckers will adopt the technology first.
But that's just my 2cp.
Insurance companies are able to trust data. That has always been the strength of insurance. Actuarial tables and statistics are counter-intuitive. These robots are safer than humans. The Data is there, and insurance follows the data.
