Swap Places and 5-foot step

Rules Questions

Is a 5' step considered normal movement?

In particular, can a front-line fighter make a full-round attack, then use Swap Step with a 5' movement to trade places with the other fighter behind him?

A 5' step is actuall;y not considered an action of any sort, so yes, that front-liner can make a full attack, then use a 5' step to step back or swap places with the appropriate feat.

Hm... Usually "normal movement" refers to "move action to walk up to your speed", but in this case I think it's just specifying that employing the feat doesn't grant you any extra movement. So I think what you describe should work.

Just get the Friendly Switch feat. It's not a teamwork feat so doesn't require your ally to also have the feat, plus its mechanics are cleaner and work better.

As this is for a PFS cavalier character who can take it as a bonus teamwork feat, Friendly Switch is not an option. But thanks for suggesting it.

The troubling part of this is the following text from the feat:

Quote:

Whenever you are adjacent to an ally who also has this feat, you can move into your ally’s square as part of normal movement.

This seems to suggest that only if you are taking a move action can you swap spaces which is really disappointing. Thoughts?

Well I've just asked my GM if I can use Friendly Switch in conjunction with step up, following step and/or step up and strike, he says no, but I suspect it is open to GM interpretation. Rules as written suggests that due to my enemy making a 5-foot step, I can move 10 feet, swap with an ally and hit him. This is very feat-heavy of course, but is it legal as per RAW?

RAW your GM is wrong. Friendly Switch activates as part of your movement or when you take a 5-foot step. Nothing about Friendly Switch says it's limited to movement during your turn, and the Step Up/Friendly Switch feats are letting you take a 5-foot step and movement, respectively.

I can see why some GMs may feel that the intent of Friendly Switch is to only be used during the character's turn and house rule accordingly, however.

This thread totally dropped off my radar, sorry you got no responses to this. Swap Places has always read to me that it is only applicable to movement during a move action taken on your turn.
