OK. I have a player in my RotRL game who has taken 3 levels of Chevalier. He believes that he gets multiple uses of the 3rd level ability to smite evil. While I insist that he only gets one usage per day as the ability states, the only difference is that it is of a level effective to his character level currently 12.

Once per day, a chevalier can smite evil as if he were a paladin of his character level.
If it said "a chevalier can smite evil as if he were a paladin of his character level." I would be more inclined to go with his interpretation.
Your thoughts?
I'm pretty sure that the "as if he were a paladin of his character level" thing is only a reference to how much bonus damage he gets, especially since the ability clearly states that he can only do this once per day.

The text is rather clear that it is once per day. Your viewpoint is correct.
Once per day, he can smite as if he was a paladin. If you want to get pedantic, that could mean that once per day, he can act as if he had X number of smites... but you can only smite once per round, and he can only do that once a day so the extra uses are useless.
It may matter if he acquired an ability that said "When you smite an evil creature, you can spend an extra use to do this cool thing", but under normal circumstances, it doesn't.
