Sorcerer Cantrips limit per day

Rules Questions

Hi everyone!

I need some clarification. I'm creating a new character for an upcoming campaign and come across the sorcerer and wizard Spells per Day tables respectively. I noticed that the sorcerer's table doesn't have a spell limit per day for cantrips. Does this mean that they can cast them as must?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Level 0 spells, cantrips and orisons for arcane and divine casters respectively, are all at will.

So you can go ahead and cast those as often as you feel like.

Same goes for wizards, but they need to choose which to prepare each day.

Cantrips can be cast at will. Both sorcerers and wizards can keep on recasting the cantrips in their head, as much as they want, all day long. The difference is that wizards can know a lot more total, but can only have a few in their head at a time.

ETA: Ninja'd by a minute!

Thank you very much HaraldKlak! But why does the wizard's Spells per Day tablet then have a column for cantrip limits per day (3 for level 1)? Or is that just to illustrate how many they can prepare per day?

Awesome! Thanks very must guys! Really helped a lot!

That's how many they can prepare. Sorcerers on the other hand, don't prepare anything so all the cantrips they know are available at any time.

And yes that means that if you take the feat that lets you lern more cantrips as a sorc or if you are a human sorc an use the favored class option to learn more cantrips you can cast them all at will.

The easiest way to think about it is that the spellcaster has to know the cantrip and have it available to cast, just like any other spell. But when he casts, it is not expended, so he can cast more of the same cantrip.
