You should include links to the amazing stats provided for 2011.. ;-)
6 Hours After Registration Opened
5 Weeks After Registration Opened
4 Weeks Before Gen Con
|
|
So to compare. At 9 hours it was 63.3% sold this year compared to 65.8% full after only 6 hours in 2011. However, in 2011 there were 2700 tickets for sale and this year there is 4462, a 65.2% increase in ticket availability.
So let's compare:
2011 - 296.5 tickets / hour
2012 - 314 tickets / hour
That's approximately a 6% increase year over year. Not too shabby.
If you read the links above, you'll see that everything was basically sold out after 5 weeks. Hopefully the extra tickets means this year we'll still sell out but with 65.2% more happy players. :-)
Last year's hot 'n' heavies after 6 hours:
97% - (93/96) - We Be Goblins
91% - (247/270) - Gen Con Special: Blood Under Absalom (1-12)
90% - (130/144) - #2-EX: The Midnight Mauler (1-7)
This years comparables:
#3-EX: The Cyphermage Dilemma (1-5) ... 474 (57.4% sold)
#4-Special: Race for the Runecarved Key (1-12+) ... 564 (73.9% sold) (or is that 92.7% Swifty?)
#4-02: In Wrath's Shadow (3-7) ... 156 (100.0% sold)

OK, just double checked my spreadsheet. Results for the special are slightly skewed as I included the 114 tickets for part 2 in the calculations.
For yesterday at +6 hours ... it is 92.7% of the 450 tickets sold.
For today at +32 hours ... it is 100% sold.
Thanks for the catch Kyle.

Yeah, it looks like there is a bigger demand for higher level scenarios than anticipated. It looks like they could have cut a couple of hundred tickets from tier 1-5, added most to tier 3-7 (and a few more to 7-11), and had a fairly even distribution between all. Perhaps some of the players that would in the past have jumped right in to the tier 1-5 scenarios are instead stearing themselves to the Beginner Box demo and First Steps, part 1. Also not sure why they scheduled the same number of tickets for 3-7 as 5-9. I guess that's where analysis of the data pays off. ;-)

|
It's kind of weird how the tier 3-7 scenarios are so full and the other tiers not as much. Maybe people play in that tier to play with friends? (Just a theory).
I think the distribution is much better this year. Sure, it's harder to get into high level games, but I think it's much better that there's space on the low level and kid's games, because those games are the most likely to have people drop in, or schedule last minute. In theory anyway, I guess we'll see.
My only constructive criticism about the schedule is this. If you're going to run a multi-part series (like First Steps), you should assume no one has played First Steps before and plan tables accordingly, so people can run them in order. Right now they are in a 33% split, which means many people are forced to run them out of order. This is especially important in the future if you're going to give us boons based on playing scenarios consecutively.
I propose the following:
Slot 1: Run 95% of the First Steps tables as "Part 1" (taking tables from part 2/3)
Slot 2: Run 90% of the tables as "Part 2" and 10% as "Part 1"
Slot 3: Run 90% of the tables as "Part 3", splitting the remaining tables between 1/2.
Furter slots into Gencon looking like the following:
Morning: 50% part 1, 50% even split between parts 2/3.
Afternoon: 50% part 2, 50% even split between parts 1/3.
Evening: 50% part 3, 50% even split between parts 1/2.
I think splits like that would be a lot better for the fans.
All in all though, huge improvement over previous years, I guess we just have to be aware the PFS population is starting to level now.

First Steps. Part 1 ... 138 (93.5% sold)
First Steps. Part 2 ... 144 (66.0% sold)
First Steps. Part 3 ... 138 (44.2% sold)
This is what's weird to me. It looks like people are just going to taste-test Pathfinder. 129 part 1 tickets sold but only 61 part 3 tickets sold. Hopefully, many of the ones who play Part 1, will come back for parts 2 & 3 with generics or buy tickets on site.

Actually if you look at the way the demand is distributed 3-7 looks pretty normal. 1-5 has the most demand (and tickets available). You figure there will be a fairly deep dip to 3-7, then a gradual fall off to the other tiers. Unfortunately, they scheduled the exact same number of tickets to 3-7 as 5-9 when you should figure there will naturally be more players at those levels (they took into consideration the drop from 5-9 to 7-11 pretty well).
|
I have a 5th level cleric and was interested in playing in higher level scenarios mostly because I'd like more of a challenge. Last year I found myself having to continuously play down because the majority of players at the table were lower level.
I don't plan on playing pre-gens. However, I only have a single higher level character. If he dies before I get to the 2 5-9 level scenarios I signed up for I won't have any choice but to do that as I don't believe my almost 2nd level fighter will be high enough level to play in those scenarios by the con. I think most people prefer to play their actual characters. I'd say if you see a fair number of pre-gens you may be seeing others in that situation.
|
Looking at it again, 3-7 is just full because there are less sessions compared to 1-5, but it does seem to indicate that most people are starting to get PCs into a higher level range. It will be interesting to note how many pregens are played in upper level scenarios this year.
I'm hoping for "none." The goal should be to funnel new players into Intro and T1-5 scenarios, rather tan throwing them into a sub-tier 10-11 game with a 7th-level pregen.
|
If pregens for higher level play appear, I am hoping that they are not mixed with "real" characters. Give them their own table. If there is a player who wants to play with friends but doesn't have a level-appropriate character, fine, but the ratio should be limited. I had a table last year with 5 pregens and one "real" character...at tier 7-8. Worst table of the convention :-(
