Designing Enchanted Fey Wood - Need Help

The Exchange

Hey there all.

I am sending my PCs into a Deep Primeval Forest ruled by the Dark Fey. Now we have all heard of how the Fey guard their homes with powerful Illusion magic and tricks designed to make their lairs/homes invisible, misdirect intruders, or even kill those who get too close. But how do I do these things in game terms? Making Perception checks and Saving throws vs. Illusion is boring and as for traps?

The only thing I can think of is setting up a series of 5 Saving Throws/Perception DC's which get harder as they move in closer (10/15/20/25/30) and setting a dangerous trap or monster if they make the check, illustrating that as they get closer there are guards/wards set. A fail means that they lose 1-3 days lost in the woods and have to start at the beginning. Meanwhile they are travelling lost in a primeval forest loaded with natural creatures such as Giant Elk, Owlbears, and Hangman Trees.

Looking for advice. What do you think?

It would also be a good idea to remember the capricious, playful, and utterly sociopathic nature of the dark fey. Have some of the traps and illusions be only minor irritants, while others would be sure death for non-pcs.

For example, have a brace of rabits enchanted to look like ogres. A harmless enough prank. Have a followup encounter in the next day or two with a brace of trolls/ogres/etc enchanted to look like rabbits.

Make sure to include specifics if the party fails an illusion check and gets lost.

On a failed will save/perception check: You notice a group of individuals off in the distance. Upon closer inspection, they are the pcs. If any attempt is made to interact with the illusions, they fade away and the pcs find themselves in a recognizable location with hours/days of travel lost.

Love it - thanks. I figure at the onset the tricks would be relatively harmless only getting more difficult as they go on.
So.....

Day 1.
10 DC. Brace of Rabbits that look like Ogres. They would prob Cast major spells at this point being ready to attack. Wasting them for the day.

Day 2.
15 DC. A brace of Ogres that look like Friendly rabbits as the PCs get closer. Knowing my PCs they would light up Fireballs anyhow.

Day 3.
20 DC. Encounter with an Enchanted Glade which hides the webs of a Giant Spider or five.

Day 4,
DC 25. Getting more dangerous here. An Illusion of a Shadowed Forest with branches hanging with massive vampiric Bats. These are actually nests of killer bees that attack the players as a massive Swarm if they attack.

Day 5.
DC 30. Really desperate here. A Friendly Pure White Deer who beckons them to follow him into the woods. Right into the Lair of a Forest Drake shrouded in the illusion of appearing as a lone Elven maiden picking flowers in a Sylvann Glade.

I don't know - too creature heavy I think.

i stumbled on this thread while searching the term Feywood.
I wanted to get inspiration for a pair of fey blooded gnome NPCs for my home game.
I love the idea of this one and will probably do some kind of bastardization of it for a low level party. maybe the reason to enter the forest is to find something important or save someone needed to move forward the players goals. The fey of the wood sees them as new toys to play with. The goals of the players might be to obtain something or someone the Fey has claimed now as its own.
Day 1 would be traumatic for my group though, they kill an ogre and the illusion fades showing they slaughtered an adorable rabbit. My wife is in my group and would probably blame me for it as the GM for making that encounter in the first place. Lol I will steer away from that part.

But I like the idea of other creatures having lost their way in the wood as well like a kobold that believes it became a dragon.
The powerful fey's influence takes those kinds of childlike ideals and makes them true to the extent its magic can change reality and illusion filling the rest. It also takes fears and makes them real in the same way.
Because I would be using the idea at a low level I wouldn't make it about a straight up clash with a powerful dark fey but maybe a clash of wit or stealth.
We have a ranger and a druid both would want to put survival to use so I should make some checks around that in some way.
Getting unlost is perfect for low levels too.
Having areas where will saves are needed otherwise I will start describing the actions other players take as being suspicious in some way to those who failed.

This concept can have a lot of cool things happening. thank you.
