Hello, I'm making a Master Summoner (in pathfinder society) and I've got a few questions regarding my Eidolon.
Firstly, is he even useful after I reach level 2? At level 2 the master summoner gets Augment Summoning for free, but this can only affect the Eidolon when summoned via the Summon Eidolon spell, and not the normal ritual. As a master summoner, my Eidolon will only get weaker in time too.
"Lesser Eidolon
A master summoner’s class level is halved (minimum 1) for the purposes of determining his eidolon’s abilities, Hit Dice, evolution pool, and so on. The eidolon otherwise functions as normal."
Further Info
Before I read this, I had intended for my Eidolon to be a great sword-wielding tank, but now I think that he'll be weak as a kitten by level 5 or so. Should I make him a skill monkey, a hp resource, or something else entirely? What use could he be? I'd like to optimize my summoner as much as I can, so if his Eidolon can still be useful I'd like him to be.

in response to Mojorat, I like that tail slap idea quite a bit. That would help keep the bad guys off of me while I work.
In response to Gjorbjond, I would, but he can only have as many ranks in stealth as his hit die. At level 6-8, this is 3+Dex modifier. At level 1, I can get this guy:

He has 15.
This sucks, as a scout would have been perfect... unless I've missed something. Feel free to call me out on it if I have, I'm here to learn. :)

Remember your ability to give a lot of summoned creatures orders is limited. In the case of the viper it really isn't useful as a scout at all. (Unless I misunderstood the reason you posted the viper)
If the goal is to make the eidolon a scout do the following. Evolution for ± 8 to a skill skill focus stealth Max ranks small size and use refuse person on him.
Serpentine eidolon will have + 21at lvl 1 and I think 26 with reduce person.
Basically decide do you want a scout, a bodyguard or so me sort of control guy or a mixture if evolution points allow. Although as an aside the level of stealth posted above is way over kill.

Oh wow, I didn't know that I could use Evolution points to up a skill. Thanks. :)
BTW Gjorbjond, I take it back, lol. He could be made into a good scout.

How is it limited? I thought that it was just a free action away to just tell it to do stuff like the Paladin's horse.

It appears where you designate and acts immediately, on your turn. It attacks your opponents to the best of its ability. If you can communicate with the creature, you can direct it not to attack, to attack particular enemies, or to perform other actions.
It's somewhat GM discretion what sort of actions you can instruct a summoned creature to perform if you can communicate with it. (If you can't communicate with it, it's clear that it just attacks your enemies to the best of its ability.) It's up to your DM whether scouting missions of various levels of complexity are within the scope of what a viper is capable of. Note that at the very least you need some kind of magical means to talk to the viper, since it has no languages of its own. Once you can summon elementals (Summon Monster II), you can communicate with those using normal language.

Basically for intelligent stuff you need a language in common. Ex aqua for water elemental. But all of the celestial or fiendish animals are animal intelligence. So the only way to make them do anything other than attack is probly handle animal.
Basically the creatures summoned want to do what you tell them, but if they can't understand you they just attack the enemy. This means planter arch on can be used as scouts vipers not so much.

That brings me to another question that I've been wondering about. How do I make a summoned monster celestial/fiendish? I've read that if you're true neutral you can apply both templates (not at the same time though) to a monster, but how do I go about this? Is there a cost that I must pay or...?
