A Summoner's Choice

Advice

When we restart our game I am going to be a summoner. Now I am thinking on what to go for, an eidolon or to use the powers on myself. Can I do both(one one day and the other another day)? If I do have to choose which would be easier because I know if I die, or even go knocked out my eidolon would be gone for the day? Thanks.

Are you implying that you need to choose an eidolon as a companion (stock Summoner), or fuse with your eidolon as one being (Synthesist Summoner)?

In either case, look for ways to increase your saves and health.

While it is possible to do so as a regular Summoner, it's far more costly, as you have your own health and saves to worry about AND your Eidolon's health and saves to worry about. This can become quite expensive as access to magic items becomes prevalent in higher levels.

As a Synthesist summoner, it's much easier to manage due to having only one entity to shore up the defenses on. If you take 2 levels of paladin, you can easily beef up your saves AND increase your casting ability by pumping up CHA. Your overall hit points will be higher due to the "temporary hit points" of your Synthesist armor (which can easily be replenished by Rejuvenate Eidolon, preferrably with a wand).

In this form, the fact that you can min-max your stats can produce high modifiers to your saves as well. Shielded-meld/greater shielded meld also help your AC and your saves further by +2/+4 respectively.

Along with defensive wondrous items (ring of deflection, bracers of armor, amulet of natural armor, cloak of resist) you can easily benchmark your AC past 30 and your saves will be above 20 each by lvl 10.

So short answer, make sure you can't be incapacitated, and the only time your eidolon won't be around is when you sleep.
