Curse of the Crimson Throne

Oh, man. The book basically gives no indication of what happens if the players ...

do the smart thing:
leave the coffer of documents sealed until they're back on dry land
... and I was a little worried because I figured my players were way too smart to screw it up.

Not so much.

So ... anybody else notice a similar trend?

My party did exactly what you said, and it wasn't a significant problem:

What happened:

The party took the coffer straight to Cressida Kroft. While she agreed that the papers were indeed damning, they weren't enough for a conviction, as they specifically listed "specimens" and the party hadn't found any coin-filled death's-head coffers yet. So they (and Cressida) knew the doctor was corrupt, but Cressida felt she didn't have enough information to move against him.

The only way it significantly altered the scenario was to turn the Hospice from a likely Total Party Wipeout (have you SEEN what they arrange against the party if the alarm is sounded?) into a sneak-n-fry, because the party knew going in that all the maidens, doctors, and Dr. D were corrupt, so they made sure that once they were seen, nobody left the room. (The most hilarious instance being the wizard summoning an octopus on top of a fleeing doctor who was trying to spread the alarm, because it was the only spell he had left that would stop him for sure).

So it did let the party move with more certainty through the hospice, and the alarm there never got raised (much to my amazement, they managed to take a perfect path that avoided any alarms), but otherwise didn't change the general plotline.

Mine found the documents and opened them on dry land, as well as took the body of the single cultist with them and cast Speak with Dead on him in the presence of Ishani and Cressida. So they confirmed for sure Davaulus was involved, and because I was feeling somewhat benevolent at the time (and the cultist was pretty ticked about being the patsy) he actually let slip that the Mantis were involved. Get the Paladin all riled up, that sort of thing.

My party also did that, but none of them studied the papers too closely and the one who did fumbled a hidden check to notice Dr. Devaulus's name. They also tried the Speak with Dead trick, during which I threw the Physicians, the Urgathoans and even the Mantis into the conspiracy but spent 2 questions denying the Queen's involvement as specified in the book.
