About Rangers

Advice

So i have a player who wants to play a ranger but he doesn't want the spellcasting ability of the ranger. He was asking if there was a way to exchange them for something else.

So im curious as to what would be appropriate?

He wants to play an assassin type character, and i dont feel to badly about allowing him to have some of the assassin abilities in exchange for the spellcasting.

Soooo, to the community i ask, what do you think?

well to my knowledge there is a 3rd party spell less ranger. Also there is an archetype that replaces spell casting with some abilities.

Complete Warrior 3.5 has variant spell less ranger and paladin.

right on, do you happen to know the Archtype in question, and what book its in?

Grand Lodge

Skirmisher I believe is the archetype. Guide archetype will rid you of favored enemy as well, and I believe the two archetypes stack.

Thank you Arlandor, though im trying to stick with pathfinder only, i've found over the course of the years 3.5 stuff tends to be unbalanced... YMMV of course but still.

Gotcha and your welcome. :)

Thank you Blackbloodtroll :) exactly what i was looking for.

Ultimate Magic has an Archtype that loses magic use and replaces it with Trapfinding and the use of ranger traps.

In the Advanced Players guide the Skirmisher Archtype loses spells for tricks that aid him or her allies.

Skirmisher (APG)
Trapper (Ultimate Combat)

Trapper brings the trapfinding as a rogue and disable device as a class skill which may make a better assassin.

Skirmisher can be added to any other archetype except Nirmathi Irregular. Trapper can arguably not be added to Beastmaster or Urban Ranger either because it changes class skills, though it's purely additive so it may be acceptable at some tables.

May I suggest that you take a look at the Expanded Spell-less Ranger?

Check the above link out, read the reviews and then decide for yourself. From what you say you are looking for, I think you will find the Spell-less Ranger is just what you are looking for :)

Thanks guys :)and i will check out the ESL Ranger Marc ;)

So i downloaded the spell-less Ranger and i do have a question? With the additional Animal companion, is it at your full base level or at a reduced rate (as listed in other archtypes? like the beastmaster?)

From reading the comments on the conversation about it, it looks like it's supposed to be your full ranger level. There are a few other questions that people asked there as well. You should check it out. That's also the best place to ask questions because the developers always chime in with answers and insight.

The Expanded Spell-less Ranger is awesome. 'Nuff said.

Correct indeed! Additional Animal Companion grants the new animal companion based on the full ranger level :)
