Campaign brainstorm: Castle building

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 32

I've been thinking about a campaign based on the plot of Might and Magic 7. The PCs have earned the title to a small castle and adjoining town that is currently in need of repair. After the goblin squatters inside are cleared out, they'll have to fix up their new home and rebuild the town while managing diplomatic threats from multiple sides as well as monsters in the countryside. Can the Kingmaker kingdom building rules handle this? I don't really intend for the PCs to expand beyond just the one town, but it could happen.

Where in Golarion could this work out? Someplace on the border of the wilds, fairly distant to major power centers, etc.

The setting for Kingmaker would work pretty well -- the River Kingdoms are largely untamed with a few city state kind of kingdoms scattered around. I think the rules from Kingmaker would be adaptable enough to handle it, too, with maybe some minor tweaks.

There's a 3.0 book specifically about castle making, like the physical construction and engineering along with many sample rooms you can "add on", the Stronghold Builders Guide. You can probably find it either online or very cheap used at a game store.

The Stronghold Builders Guidebook is definitely a good place to start and even comes with a map and detailed description of a small keep. Hopefully they'll eventually update it.
