I'm making an Ulfan character for a friend's campaign this summer and I want to make a Loki-like trickster but I can't really decide on a class or even a proper theme.
I'm considering a bard, but really any trick-related controlling magic user is fine.
We start at 1st lvl and the my stats are (in no particular order btw): 12, 16, 15, 9, 16, 7.

Hmmm. Bard's great for that archetype, and very workable. I'd go Str 9 Dex 16 Con 12 Int 15 Wis 7 Cha 18 for stats, grab Weapon Finesse as a 1st level Feat (probably along with Spell Focus - Enchantment), and get me an Agile Weapon when I could, but build primarily for spellcasting and save DCs from there. Go Oratory for your first Versatile Performance, it's great for a talker. Should be fun and effective. He's not an optimal melee combatant, but he's fun, thematic, and pretty close to an optimal caster Bard build (having only 'wasted' Weapon Finesse). Caster Bards also run out of really good Feats rapidly, letting you get some combat Feats (I reccomend Piranha Strike and Arcane Strike, but probably just those) as the build starts to hit mid-levels.
Inquisitor (of someone trickery related, maybe with the Conversion Inquisition) is also a good alternative for this character idea (and probably uses a similar stat spread to the above, only switching Wis and Cha).

I recommend high Strength for use with two-handed weapons, preferably those with reach.
If going melee Bard, sure. The build I post is a caster-Bard who dabbles in melee. He won't do the same damage, but with a buckler and higher Dex his AC will be a lot better, and his spellcasting will of course be vastly better, as will his skills.
And for the record, I'd go without an Archetype, though Sandman's probably the one if you really must have one.
Also, an Ulfen with 9 Strength seems wrong... just wrong.
He asked for Loki, that's the build I posted. Lithe, quick sneaky, and a master of enchantment and illusion. You are familiar with Loki, yes? He's not exactly known for his strength (quite the reverse if anything).

You don't need to be so defensive, and yea, I know of him. Loki isn't exactly known for his Strength, but he is a god (or rather a giant). In comparison to other gods (like Thor), Loki isn't especially powerful - but compared to a mortal? I wouldn't say he's weak.
Anyways, I'll dip out. Advice given; take it or leave it ;p

Sorry if I came across as defensive, that wasn't my intent. Seriously, my bad if it seemed that way, tone's hard to get across on line. I was really just trying to get across that both builds were viable, but I can see how it might've come across differently than that.

True! But on the other hand this character is a more mortal scaled user of the archetype...

Indeed, I'll likely do the same. :)
