The Spiked Gauntlet: Can it be a viable weapon?

Advice

Grand Lodge

I am a fairly experienced player and GM and I have long wanted to play a character that uses two Spiked Gauntlets as his primary weapons (in this case specifically a Warforged from Eberron). However every time I create a build and look at the character I grumble at how much worse he is than similar fighters and barbarians. I'm not a huge min/maxer mind you, but it's no fun playing a fighter who does so little damage he's basically useless in, ya know, a fight. The Spiked Gauntlet is just so weak, 1d4 damage, times 2 crit. and only a nat. 20 crit range. I've made my own homebrew PRC but I'd like to see what others thing or have created.

Has anyone made a character like this or can suggest a build, feats or even 3rd party PRC's that might help me realize this character? Any advice would be appreciated.

There's a fighter archetype in Ultimate Combat that works wonders if you're looking for a Master of the Spiked Gauntlet, the Brawler. By 19th level you get something like +5 to hit and +7 on damage with gauntlets; heck, you get a +3 on damage by fifth level. And that's before adding in things like weapon specialization or even your Strength score.

Brawlers get pretty major damage bonuses to weapons like the spiked gauntlet. For them its one of the best weapons.

Edit:Damn Ninjas

I can't believe I missed something so obvious, ha ha, I must have glanced right over it (though I did just get the book not long ago). Thanks ^_^

Pumping your dex and getting agile spiked gauntlets will allow you to two-weapon fight with spiked gauntlets.

Go with blackbloodtroll's suggestion and also pick yourself up some Gloves of Dueling from APG:

Quote:

Gloves of Dueling

Aura faint transmutation; CL 5th

Slot hands; Price 15,000 gp; Weight —

Description

These supple leather gloves grant the wearer gains a +4 bonus to his CMD against disarm attacks, attempts to sunder his wielded weapons, and effects that cause him to lose his grip on his weapons (such as grease). The wearer doesn't drop held weapons when panicked or stunned. If the wearer has the weapon training class feature and is using an appropriate weapon, his weapon training bonus increases by +2.

Construction

Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, greater magic weapon; Cost 7,500 gp

Spiked Gauntlets take up your weapon slot, not your glove slot. You can still wear gloves underneith them. These are the gloves of choice. Basically it gives you another +2 on attack and damage rolls.

the Cestus is another armored glove that has a 19-20X2 crit

Not only are Cestuses (Cestusi?) better on crit range, they can do bludgeoning or piercing damage, and monks can use them with flurry of blows.

Moral of the story: Cestus > Spiked Glove.

I'm liking the idea of a Weapon Adept (Monk) 6/Brawler (Fighter) 14 an aweful lot. You can't flurry and TWF at the same time. But you can get a nice unarmored AC (already high dex, wis and an extra +1 to AC), tons of feats (5 bonus from monk, 8 bonus from fighter), high maneuverability (slow fall 30ft, +20ft fast movement, high jump), great saves (all +5 from monk, still mind and purity of body) and a really cool looking guy in little more than a loincloth and bith spikey gloves tearing people's faces off.

Pumping strength will still get you more damage than using the Agile enhancement unless the GM rules by RAW that double slice applies to dex now, and overrules the Agile statement that it can't add the full dex mod to the off-hand weapon.

Str only adds +damage though while Dex adds +damage, saves and AC. Dex is the superior score. Especially if you go the unarmored route.

It's been a while since Latin class, but I'll guess cesti.

You could play an alternate tiefling, and with luck, you can gain the ability to wield large size gauntlets. I thoroughly approve of this.
