Disguise + Disguise Self

Rules Questions

Hi All,

Per the rules, Disguise Self cannot be used to change your appearance to that of another creature type. But it can give you a +10 on your Disguise check.

The Disguise skill can be used to alter your appearance to that of another creature type.

So my question is this: if I use my Disguise skill to disguise my character as a different creature type, can I then cast Disguise Self to get the +10 vs. Perception checks for 10 minutes per caster level?

Thanks!

I think not. It says "if you use this spell to create a disguise...".

Nope. If you want to disguise yourself from human into a dire tiger, then you have to use disguise, not Disguise Self, because that spell doesn't work for that.

If you want to disguise yourself from a human into an elf or a dwarf, then that's within your creature type, you can use Disguise Self for it and get the +10 bonus on it.

Yeah, I figured as much.

What if an outsider NPC wants to appear as a human, for the purposes of deceiving the party? There doesn't seem to be a spell or spell-like ability that would cover that. Any thoughts?

I've got a honey of a subplot for my players, but I need said outsider in order to pull it off.

Disguise self does not let you change your creature type. It does let you change your subtype. So a human could look like a different humanoid (dwarf, elf, half-ork, etc) or an outsider NPC could look like a different outsider (demon, devil, etc. This list is pretty long).

In that case, the outsider would want to use Alter Self, because that turns you into a humanoid by default no matter what your original race is.

It's certainly a trope of fantasy that demons can appear to be specific individuals. I think strictly interpreting RAW this doesn't work but I think most groups would accept a GM doing this without too much grumpiness. Succubi get alter self as a native ability, not sure about other demons.

The fun thing is that Aasimar or Tieflings - who are described as "basicly human, with a hint of outsider in them" - can disguise themselves as any kind of Outsider from pit-fiend, over Archon to anything you can think of, but they can't Disguise Self themselves into a human.

The 4E type system is a little better for things like this. Creatures have a body type and an origin. Humans, Elves, and Succubi are all Humanoids, but their origins are Natural, Fey, and Outsider, respectively.
