I believe the monk needs some work and here are a few ideas that I came up with.
I would the original flurry of blows mechanic.
I believe the Monk should be designed around the Barbarian's Rage Power and Paladin's Divine Bond abilities.
Instead of the Monk getting certain abilities at a certain level, he could choose between "Ki" powers in order to customize the Monk to whatever you want. Say for example you don't want "Wholeness of Body" at 7th level, well there would be other abilities to choose from. I would say give the Monk a different "Ki" power every two levels.
Now with regards to the "Divine Bond" ability of the Paladin, I would make it a part of the whole "Ki" mechanic and enable the Monk to enchant his fists along with certain weapon properties such as flaming or frost for example. He would be able to do this a certain number of times per day.
Now if the Monk would have abilities like this then I would keep the Monk MAD because I believe that would balance the class out.
