Oh man, I used to go to that store all the time back when I lived on Lake City Way. Picked up many an old classic RPG item there. I remember a guy who worked there who always had his dog behind the counter, it was friendly Husky-like dog.
My wife also used to buy old Dentist tools for to use for sculpting. Glad to see that somebody got what was left of their old stock and will put it to good use. I will always miss that store.

I gave up on getting my hands on a copy of Castle Forlorn so long ago that I think the dinosaurs were still in their death throws then.
And today I get to order it!
Evil Paizo, making me spend money, and then sit around waiting anxiously until the end of next month to find out what they'll make me spend money on next!

Well I see one In Nomine book, I guess that means thats the only one of that they have. Pity.
Ha, another In Nomine fan. I used to have pretty much all the books. If memory serves, "You Are Here" was one of the better splatbooks in what was generally a very well-done line.
There are only a couple of things from this period I'd lunge at (GURPS Swashbucklers, Return to the Tomb of Horrors). That said, yeah, it's pretty interesting. And Flight 13 could still make for a seriously fun one-shot!

Meanwhile, here's a question for the Paizo folks (or anyone else who's worked in distribution / wholesaling / retail).
Some of this stuff has been sitting around for twenty! years! give or take, and still in the original shrinkwrap. That seems like a long time to carry inventory. Is it unusual? Or, within the bounds of what passes for normal in the industry?
My FLGS periodically has clean-the-shelves sales. Is there no equivalent to this at the distributor level?

American Eagle was kind of special, they had looooots of space so they pretty much just kept everything they ever stocked on the shelves all the time. They must have owned the property because for a hobby store it was a huge place. I used to go in there hunting for old mini's of which they had mass quantities.
I'm guessing they aren't entirely unique, but they were very unusual. Places that own the property tend to have bigger stores with older stock and those that rent usually can't afford that and have smaller places and only keep strong sellers on the shelves.
Distributors I know less about but I suspect its similar. If space is not cheap then you only stock what you think you can sell.
The funny thing about this for me is that I've been in that store for years, and seen those products just hanging out year after year prominently displayed, but on line, some of them will sell fast and furious. Amazing difference.

-willI wrote most of it this time. Liz wrote the details paragraph. Couldn't resist the walk down memory lane. :)
-Lisa
That was my guess - it was a distinctly Lisa memory and description. Excellent - talk about a TRIP! ;) I don't blame you for languishing in it for a nice personal moment.
Now 'scuse me, I gotta read about the Darklords and use them as some fun extras in Carrion Crown...
Nice. :D I keep getting hints dropped on me about Spelljammer stuff, because it has a lot of similar themes to what I would like to do with fantasy/SF-hybridy kinda material for Farseeker. >:D I am looking forward to that.
What a great chance to relive a sliver of the past and have it reach out and touch in such a unique and nostalgic way. Yeah, what a trip - right on down Memory Lane. Way cool.

I got three Ravenloft supplements that I ordered from this sale.
They're still in the shrink wrap, and include the old TSR catalog from the same time. Talk about a trip down memory lane!
My game group is on hiatus from our normal weekly game due to general fatigue, so we've been doing board games for a few weeks to fill the gap. I recently got a shrink-wrapped copy of the "Haunted Tower" boxed set from a used bookstore - it was made for use with the "New, Easy to Master D&D Game" TSR made in the early '90s.
When I broke out the "Haunted Tower" set (which included a standalone game as well as three Basic D&D modules), out came the 1992 Fall/Winter TSR catalogue, as well as a customer response card sent care of TSR's marketing department in Lake Geneva.
We're wondering if the mail forwarding system is good enough that someone at WotC might actually receive the response card if I filled it out and mailed it - I can just imagine some poor schmoe at Wizards' marketing division getting this thing and going, "His favorite setting is Spelljammer? WTF? Has he been living in a basement for two decades?" =]
(Can't wait to see what the AE sale has in store for 2nd Ed grognards like me, btw - hoping for some good modules and sourcebooks!)

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Mild disappointment at the selection of Spelljammer stuff, but I still picked up the REF1 D&D character sheets and the Mage Storyteller's Screen. :D
Also, the titles, listings, and pictures are all mixed up for the TSR novels, specifically the D&D novels, the TSR generic fantasy novels, and the Spelljammer novels.
