A is for American Eagles!

Indulge in nostalgia with a massive old-school gaming sale!

Maybe it's kismet. Or maybe just coming around full circle. But sometimes life takes a funny bounce and your past enters your present. Well, such was the case when I got a call from American Eagles, a retail store up here in Seattle who used to be a regional distributor. Back in the day, when I was at White Wolf and later Wizards of the Coast, I used to sell to American Eagles. Ars Magica, Vampire: The Masquerade, Talislanta and The Primal Order all left our warehouse (read: garage attached to the house) and headed to American Eagles. So when the owners of American Eagles decided to retire and call it quits, I was pleased that they called me and asked if Paizo wanted to buy their remaining inventory. Walking through their store was like a walk down memory lane. I saw products that I had personally packed into boxes all those years ago sitting there in shrinkwrap, as pristine as on the day I shipped them in the late 1980s and early 1990s. And there wasn't just stuff I had sold them. There was a treasure trove of old products from the big boys of the day: TSR, Mayfair Games, Iron Crown, Steve Jackson, West End Games, FASA and more. Roleplaying games, board games, wargames, novels, miniatures, and all sorts of other esoteric stuff was also jammed into this store. It was gamer's heaven. So we bought it. All of it! And now we're selling it to you!

A veritable time capsule of gaming's past, these products will be rolled out for sale here on paizo.com over the next six months. On the last Friday of each month, we'll reveal a new selection of minty fresh, never-used products from the 1990s and earlier. Some of these are single copies, while others may have a dozen or so copies in stock. We're generally grouping them by topic or game system or brand, but I guarantee that odd products from one line or another may shift from one month to the next as we find more gems we didn't know about in the treasure trove we bought. All of these products are being offered at their original MSRP prices, so this truly is like stepping through a time machine and hitting your local game store circa twenty years ago!

First up on the wayback machine is Eternal Champion! The iconic Elric of Melniboné, one of the original antiheroes of the fantasy genre, stars in this roleplaying game from Chaosium. Wargaming fans can check out over 30 board games from 3W, and one of the original suppliers of our fantasy miniature needs, Ral Partha, has old-school metal minis ready to go for your tabletop games!

Fans who cut their teeth on TSR products, we have a lot of goodies for you! Are you a fan of Role Aids from First Edition, or the City State of the Invincible Overlord? We've got 'em! Want notes from the Van Richten's Guides to beef up your Carrion Crown game, or maybe you're interested in converting an old Ravenloft adventure to pad out the campaign? Yup, we've got those too! Top Secret? Dragon Dice? TSR's Blood Wars Collectible Card Game, with the distinctive Tony diTerlizzi art style from Planescape? Whether your game was Ars Magica, Dungeons & Dragons, James Bond 007, Top Secret, or White Wolf, this month's selection is sure to hit all those classic gaming memories for a lot of us—and we're just getting started!

Be sure to check back on the last Friday in June! We'll buff up the American Eagles Sale by adding AD&D 2nd edition, Marvel Super Heroes, GURPS, Spelljammer, Mage, Spacemaster, and all sorts of other neat stuff!

More Blog.

I just spent the better part of an hour trying to set up an account at the Acaeum so that I could tell them about this sale. The Ravenloft stuff may include some collectables.

Yeah, I'm rounding out my collection of Van Richten's guides. :D

Wow! What a score!

You didn't happen to see the Ark of the Covenant in there did you?

This is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh man, I used to go to that store all the time back when I lived on Lake City Way. Picked up many an old classic RPG item there. I remember a guy who worked there who always had his dog behind the counter, it was friendly Husky-like dog.

My wife also used to buy old Dentist tools for to use for sculpting. Glad to see that somebody got what was left of their old stock and will put it to good use. I will always miss that store.

I gave up on getting my hands on a copy of Castle Forlorn so long ago that I think the dinosaurs were still in their death throws then.

And today I get to order it!

Evil Paizo, making me spend money, and then sit around waiting anxiously until the end of next month to find out what they'll make me spend money on next!

Reggie.

Noooo! Now I'm going to have to try to remember to check back every last Friday of the month to see if a Balrog's Host card set's been posted.

Silver Crusade

Curse you sidecart and your ever expansive nature!

Liberty's Edge

Splendid news!

Many things that I have enjoyed... and which are gathering dust in the corners of my hoard... an excuse to get them out, read 'em and post some reviews :)

Too much stuff I want to order it all. I hope I left stuff that will stick around long enough to order it later.

Ah sweet Ravenloft nostalgia. Looking forward to the Spelljammer stuff, though.

Talk about a save vs. Nostalgia...

Nothing I want in this batch, but if there's some Battletech treasure or a Tarroka deck or W:tGW out there...

Ha, another In Nomine fan. I used to have pretty much all the books. If memory serves, "You Are Here" was one of the better splatbooks in what was generally a very well-done line.

There are only a couple of things from this period I'd lunge at (GURPS Swashbucklers, Return to the Tomb of Horrors). That said, yeah, it's pretty interesting. And Flight 13 could still make for a seriously fun one-shot!

Yeah I have most of the books and the ones I don't have I got PDF's from SJG. Though i would like to round out my book collection.

Meanwhile, here's a question for the Paizo folks (or anyone else who's worked in distribution / wholesaling / retail).

Some of this stuff has been sitting around for twenty! years! give or take, and still in the original shrinkwrap. That seems like a long time to carry inventory. Is it unusual? Or, within the bounds of what passes for normal in the industry?

My FLGS periodically has clean-the-shelves sales. Is there no equivalent to this at the distributor level?

American Eagle was kind of special, they had looooots of space so they pretty much just kept everything they ever stocked on the shelves all the time. They must have owned the property because for a hobby store it was a huge place. I used to go in there hunting for old mini's of which they had mass quantities.

I'm guessing they aren't entirely unique, but they were very unusual. Places that own the property tend to have bigger stores with older stock and those that rent usually can't afford that and have smaller places and only keep strong sellers on the shelves.

Distributors I know less about but I suspect its similar. If space is not cheap then you only stock what you think you can sell.

The funny thing about this for me is that I've been in that store for years, and seen those products just hanging out year after year prominently displayed, but on line, some of them will sell fast and furious. Amazing difference.

Oooh, I just noticed MSH stuff might be forthcoming. Still think that was the best Supers game.

I wrote most of it this time. Liz wrote the details paragraph. Couldn't resist the walk down memory lane. :)

Not surprised... I spent the weekend digging out old books. Excuse to read & review them :)

I got three Ravenloft supplements that I ordered from this sale.

They're still in the shrink wrap, and include the old TSR catalog from the same time. Talk about a trip down memory lane!

Now 'scuse me, I gotta read about the Darklords and use them as some fun extras in Carrion Crown...

That was my guess - it was a distinctly Lisa memory and description. Excellent - talk about a TRIP! ;) I don't blame you for languishing in it for a nice personal moment.

Nice. :D I keep getting hints dropped on me about Spelljammer stuff, because it has a lot of similar themes to what I would like to do with fantasy/SF-hybridy kinda material for Farseeker. >:D I am looking forward to that.

What a great chance to relive a sliver of the past and have it reach out and touch in such a unique and nostalgic way. Yeah, what a trip - right on down Memory Lane. Way cool.

My game group is on hiatus from our normal weekly game due to general fatigue, so we've been doing board games for a few weeks to fill the gap. I recently got a shrink-wrapped copy of the "Haunted Tower" boxed set from a used bookstore - it was made for use with the "New, Easy to Master D&D Game" TSR made in the early '90s.

When I broke out the "Haunted Tower" set (which included a standalone game as well as three Basic D&D modules), out came the 1992 Fall/Winter TSR catalogue, as well as a customer response card sent care of TSR's marketing department in Lake Geneva.

We're wondering if the mail forwarding system is good enough that someone at WotC might actually receive the response card if I filled it out and mailed it - I can just imagine some poor schmoe at Wizards' marketing division getting this thing and going, "His favorite setting is Spelljammer? WTF? Has he been living in a basement for two decades?" =]

(Can't wait to see what the AE sale has in store for 2nd Ed grognards like me, btw - hoping for some good modules and sourcebooks!)

Can't wait to see what kind of MSH goodies you're going to unveil!!

YAY AGAIN!

Just curious - is this the extent of the Marvel stuff, or will there be more next month? I'm looking for a 1991 copy of the "Gamer's Handbook to the Marvel Universe (MU7).

Thanks, you awesome Paizo people!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Mild disappointment at the selection of Spelljammer stuff, but I still picked up the REF1 D&D character sheets and the Mage Storyteller's Screen. :D

Also, the titles, listings, and pictures are all mixed up for the TSR novels, specifically the D&D novels, the TSR generic fantasy novels, and the Spelljammer novels.
