You might have to run them through a tutorial, by putting them into different situations. Some people are also very slow to pick the rules. I remember a player who we had to explain the rules too every session. I was new at the time, but I ended up answering questions just to keep the GM calm. In all other aspects he was a smart guy.

Our group uses Obsidian Portal. Our GM insists that we keep our character's stats updated on the site, as it allows him to better prepare encounters for us. He even adds a small XP award for faithful updating as an incentive.
One nice thing with Obsidian Portal is that it has a Pathfinder character sheet that allows you to fill in the fields. While it doesn't have automatic calculations, it does present the stats in a recognizable format.
Sure, it doesn't have the same functionality as Hero Lab. But it is free.

I thought Hero Lab was available on the Mac now. Maybe it's just in a testing phase, but I could have sworn it was available to everyone.
Hero Lab for the Mac is still finishing up Beta testing. It's down to the final few weeks of polishing now before the official release.
That being said, anyone with a Hero Lab license can access the Beta. So it is possible to purchase the product and use it now on the Mac.

As for the DM keeping my character sheet? No. Never, ever. My sheet is mine. If he wants to look at it during the game, or wants to make a copy (or me to provide one) or whatever I'm fine with that.. but the original comes home with me, and its my responsibility to bring it to the next game. Clearly though, your opinion on that issue might vary :)-S
I don't really care which one you call "original" and which one you call "copy" all I do care about is that the sheet you have matches the sheet I have when you come back to the table.

I took a peek at OP today, but I wasn't even remotely fond of the interface.

Ah, good deal. The website says you can apply for beta access, but doesn't indicate how readily it becomes available. Also I wasn't sure about the timeline. But both pieces of information are very useful, so thank you. :)
