In the blog post about buildings and structures it noted how they could be damaged.
How are offline protection going to work? Say a small group of people get a tower or other structure? How will it be protected when all someone has to do is wait off-hours to attack the structure?
Seems this is going to limit structures to uber-guilds only.

Probably a fee for so many hours and what type of guards you want to hire. Their skill/gear/levels probably dependent on what you want to pay and for how long.
Like to see being able to go to a wizards school to pick up someone and then to a temple to hire a cleric or paladin as well. Otherwise i want to hire a druid to make my plants into carnivorous plants, that's no ordinary tulip!
Possibilities, but still figured how protected will your place be even with npc's and crafty thieves. So hopefully can set up magic and regular traps, which I might set off myself (eep).

In Eve, you could get "licenses" worth so many hours of operation of a player created station in orbit, blah blah blah I never got into that part... but how about this?
As you quest for NPC organizations, you could earn reputation which you trade for gear, skill books, or vouchers of support. Each voucher of support could be worth 1 hour of protection by NPC guards of the organization's type and player characters with access to a player structure (be it hideout, settlement, or kingdom) could then use the vouchers to get NPC protection for their structure for X many hours. While such protection wouldn't grantee absolute protection, it could be used as persuasion not to attack.
Also, I believe structures should only be damaged by siege engines or large groups of people. Such actions could only feasibly be done if war has been declared between your player created group and another player created group. If declaring/maintaining war carries a high cost, siege engines are expensive and time consuming to build/move, and a 24 notice is given with a declaration of war (after all, you have to let all the NPC guards know the higher ups are getting paid for group X and group Y to bloody each other’s noses) I think things will work out just fine.
Just saying.

@Pheoran Armiez
It has already been said that forts and settlements will only be damagable by seige equipment.
It's understandable that a single person could set a inn on fire.
I do think that certain structures like watchtowers and inns, should be upgradable to a seige-only status(more sturdy construction)

I could see structures having the ability to be upgraded, but I also like the idea that a settlement can upgrade its security to something more akin the NPC settlements. They should have to pay for such an upgrade as part of a continued cost of maintenance, but otherwise I think there should be measures player created settlements can take to ensure their safety and the safety of their allies within their borders.

Please Mr. Developer, make sure I don't have to protect my stuff when I'm not actively engaging the game, it's not fair to expect me to plan long term beyond my game time, even in a perpetual environment that changes for the long term due to my actions.
Wait, is that fair? That sounds too one sided to me.
Bring it on. I can take it. What does not kill me, makes me stronger.
