Gunslinger / Gunsmithing question

Pathfinder Society

Grand Lodge 1/5

I recently rolled a Gunslinger (Musket Master) for our Pathfinder Society campaign. At the end of the first session, we had earned 417 GP each. I decided to use the downtime to upgrade my weapon to a masterwork weapon, which requires 300 GP and 1 day of work in order to complete. When I told my GM this, he said I couldn't because according to him everything must be done during a session. He also said, as the DM, that between the sessions there would be one week where we were not on quests or anything, so it kind of seems silly.

This seems to me to take the concept of gunsmithing, as well as my ranks in Profession (brewer) and throw them out the window, making them pointless.

Can someone clarify on this? Is my DM right, or is he misguided?

(cross-posting from my other thread in the wrong section)

Some right, mainly wrong.

You can, in the COnditions Gained/Items Purchased section, spend the 300 GP during between session time to upgrade your starting musket to Masterwork. It has been explicitly stated, several times, that that part of the Gunsmithing feat for Gunslingers was not changed.

You cannot, between sessions, do any "normal" crafting/brewing, this is covered by the Day Job roll at the end of a session.

The time between sessions is nebulous for the PCs. It is undefined, but most things that require tracking time between scenarios are not authorized for PFS play, like magic item crafting and normal item crafting (except a few, specific circumstances, spelled out in the Guide & PFS FAQ).

Using Gunsmithing to upgrade that initial weapon to Masterwork; healing between scenarios, etc., are all done in the between time, and, since time is not tracked, all you need to do is spend the money.

Just to give you some official ammo:

A gunslinger can use the Gunsmithing feat to upgrade her starting gun for the standard 300 gp cost, but other classes taking this feat don't get a free gun along with it, and thus need to either buy a masterwork version or a mundane version.

However you want to word it, during or in between, all spending of gold has to be witnessed by a GM, so you cannot just get out your characters at home and do some shopping. You can make a list of what you want to do with your gold and then at the beginning of the next session with that character, show the list to your GM for approval, and only then write it on your character sheet and in the items purchased box on your chronicle.

Really? I always thought that you could go home and spend your 5k gold or whatever on whatever you could legally purchase via fame / sheets without anyone else present.

If, as a GM, I had to witness the gold tracking of each PC as they do it, my 4 hour nights would become 8 hour nights :S Also, its nice to get some downtime between games to think about what you need to purchase.

I understand if you're saying that at the start of each game you inform your current GM of what you most recently purchased, but I don't believe you "can't" buy stuff without GM Big Brother. If you're audited, that's another matter, I suppose.

Walter,

A GM must be present in order for you to purchase items, so you may only purchase items during or after a scenario.

And like you said, I think it is fine that a player makes a list of what he wants his character to buy at the beginning of the session, but that character does not have any of that stuff until the GM approves it.

This, is an example of a rule that is rarely Followed, and one I will even admit I rarely follow because of the time constraints.

Huh, weird. Actually, It strikes me as beyond weird that this would be a rule, as this is essentially what auditing is. And honestly, I don't have the time to manage everyone else's characters in addition to the new ones I have to run for the first time each week. But if thems the rules, I guess now I'll get a barrage of people telling me - all at once, probably - what they are buying at the start of each game. Then again, after I tell them they're going to "really cold, ice place of bring frost protection" :P

Well, then its a good thing I'm a gm as well as a player, then isn't it... ;) As long as they don't change it to a GM other than yourself...

One of the gm's in our group kind of follows this. It usually seems like a pain, but eh. We usually don't have time when we're done to do this sort of paperwork, and since its home/private pfs game, I tend to let it slide. As long as their math adds up, what's the difference between having to watch then and letting them do it on their own time?

Indeed.
