Gunslingers in Korvosa

How would you handle gunslingers in Korvosa? Where can you buy guns? Would you turn some NPC's into gunslingers? Which ones?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

There's nothing that says one couldn't have Gunslingers in Korvosa, but my understanding of Guns was that they were extremely rare. So there wouldn't necessarily be a gunsmith in Korvosa, supplies may need to be special ordered.

If Guns really are extremely rare outside of Alkenstar, than you wouldn't really need to change any NPCs as they wouldn't really have access to any. However, if you want to run a game where Guns are more prevalent, then some NPCs you might consider are some of the Plague Doctors. Maybe 1 our of 3 is a Gunslinger, and The Cinderlander has a very 'vengeful cowboy' theme so you might consider changing him to a Gunslinger or letting him be trained in the use of Guns. Might even be interesting to see a PC Gunslinger get into a duel with an NPC Gunslinger, wild west style.

I should mention, Acme currently has all tumbleweeds placed on back order, so you may need to go find one on your own.

Liberty's Edge

Personally, I've added a gunshop to Eodred's Walk (M4, page 22 of the Guide to Korvosa), with the owner being a manic-depressive aasimar; better to catch her in her "club a seal to make a better deal" mood then her "the prices are what they're marked, pay for it and go away" mood. There's another one in the ratfolk warrens on Old Korvosa, but generally only ratfolk and kobolds will know about it. (Yeah, my Korvosa is slightly deviant.)

I've also added one gunshop not far from the abadar temple. The owner is a gnome (father of the alchemist gnome in our party)
Still I didn't introduced any gunslinger npc yet. may be a red mantis ? or may be some gray maiden ?

I don't think the Grey Maidens would really fit.

Grey Maidens:
If you recall, the Grey Maidens are female warriros captured by the Queen. They are tortured and brainwashed until they are mindlessly loyal to the Queen. They are, more or less, carbon copy versions of each other.

Think the Clone Troppers from Star Wars, but instead of growing genetically modified clones, she's torturing people until the follow her every order, and then gives them training.

Potential Candidates:
It's one of the reasons why I thought the Doctors would make such great gunslingers. They strike me as very 'scientific' bad guys. They would also be good Alchemists.

Dr. Davaulus would also be a good candidate, and might be the best as he'd be a single NPC with a gun, where as the Doctors would introduce many such weapons. Maybe make him wield a Rapier and a Gun? Kind of an 'opening shot' and then he gets into a melee. Reminds me of the Disney version of the Musketeers.

But ultimately, the choice is yours. If you want to introduce guns and make them a common occurrence, give them to NPCs that the party will face on a regular basis, such as the Assassins. If you want to make them present, but more rare, give them to important or named NPCs, like the Doctor, or Blackjack. The Emperor (from Old Korvosa) would also be a good choice.

Oh man, who's that guy from book 4?

:
The Cinderlander? If anyone should have a gun, it should be him; his crossbow might as well be one. Heck, you could even justify the rising of a Pale Stranger from Bestiary 3 when they kill him off.

Also, I kind of like the Emperor of Old Korvosa whipping out a side-arm at the PCs. I think the idea of the doctors having them above is great also. You could also justify any of the Rakshasas in Book 3 having firearms since they're pretty far traveled.

In my game, I gave the Cinderlander a Heavy Repeating Crossbow, with 5 clips of 5 bolts each and the first bolt was a Screaming bolt. I changed his Animal Companion to a horse (and traded out Horizon Walker for pure Ranger levels). He'd ride by on his horse with Haste on, and use Rapid Shot to make 5 attacks. Oh god did my party Hate him. They only had one good archer in the party at the time, but the Cinderlander was putting him to shame (thanks in part to bad rolls).

It really annoyed them because he'd attack at night (they decided to travel at night and have minimal sleep to outpace a group of people that were following them). He'd ride by, fire 5 shots, then ride off into the darkness for a round to reload. Then he would ride back in and (using stealth) creep up on the party and fire 5 more shots, and ride out again.

It wasn't until the Mystic Theurge in the party decided that enough was enough and used an Eversmoking Bottle that he finally left them alone.

If I had made him use guns instead, it'd probably have had mostly the same effect.

completely agree with you on the first point

Spoiler:
I actually cloned one female warrior

one another candidate

Spoiler:
Girrigz, the wererat. The ratfolks are a good choice for gunslingers, so why not a wererat ? I did the conversion and it will be fun to play : https://dl.dropbox.com/u/14722510/girrigz%20gunslinger.pdf

I could totally see Field Commander Kroft as a gunslinger.
