Playing Magic Circle of Protection good

Rules Questions

Two questions.

"This spell has an alternative version that you may choose when casting it. A magic circle against evil can be focused inward rather than outward. When focused inward, the spell binds a non-good called creature (such as those called by the lesser planar binding, planar binding, and greater planar binding spells)"

How long does it take to prepare this? Can you do it while in combat? Or do the RAW just assume a caster would do it before summon spell.

2nd question is when a creature is trying to break through the protection. Does the mage add spell penetration & greater spell penetration to over come the SR?
Example would be if a Water elemental attempts to break through the magic circle centered on the wizard.

Like the regular version of the spell, the alternative version is a standard action to cast. If you then want to summon something inside it, you need to do so in the next round.

Regarding their use of spell resistance to break the spell; yes, I would apply spell penetration, because that's the intent of the feat.

I believe more detailed rules on this are in the Planar Binding spell.

Yup: link

Is the SR tested each time the "creature" attempts to break through or just once per casting?

I was thinking about using the alternate version of the spell to trap a creature already summoned and attacking you. Just thinking.

Thanks all around!

They should only get one opportunity to test SR against the spell, just like a character subjected to Dominate Person only gets one chance to test Will against it unless they have the Slippery Mind ability.

We played this last week and my protection spell 10ft radius was getting hammered by a large water elemental. Each round we did the SR and I finally lost!
