Animal Companion: Toughness vs. Iron Will

Advice

Simple questions:

Toughness vs. Iron Will for an animal companion

Both have potential staying power, but which will give more bang for the buck?

It really depends upon ability scores, intended role of your companion, your own abilities and buffs available. I would probably get Toughness first and Iron Will later but having to choose one and only of those I would rather get Iron Will.

Intended roll: (I'm a switch-hitter Ranger)

Trip to prevent them from getting to me too quickly. (thus allow me to use my archery more before closing in. Charge them while prone for a healthy +8 to hit, with the flanking wolf.)

Once in Melee, trip so I can full-round power attack with no detriment to hit and deal some awesome damage.

Pet also has vital strike, and 26 str at level 9 (and he's booned (Boon Companion) so he's of equal level to me) So it will be doing some decent damage as well).

It's only the difference between 38 and 43 hp at level 5. But I see the point on Iron will due to the "Save or stuck" potential.

Wolf has 12 will, so his will would be +1 via stats only. Then just the normal leveling.

I forgot that animal companions have less HD than the character level of their owner, which means they get lesser benefit from Toughness. Iron Will becomes even more attractive taking that into consideration. At least if you plan to reach higher levels where the difference is more visible. However, it also means that its Will save will be growing very very slowly.

Very good point! Iron will is likely the better option.
