[Super Genius Games] Anachronistic Adventurers: The Daredevil

Scarab Sages

The third of our Anachronistic Adventurer line of PDFs, The Daredevil, is now available!

The daredevil is the kind of character that might actually be called an "adventurer” by members of common society – someone who is driven to regularly and intentionally do things that are clearly dangerous and frightening. Some daredevils are driven by the desire to experience evergreater thrills, while others feel a sense of duty to undertake perilous tasks so that others don’t have to. What unites all daredevils is that no matter why they run into a building when everyone else is running out, they have a personality that allows them to do dangerous things with a calm and poise that belies the great skill and concentration such tasks demand. A daredevil is more than a thrill-seeker, he is a professional risk-taker who is trained and predisposed to accomplish deeds often described as suicidal, foolhardy, or even impossible. Daredevils may be stunt men, masked vigilantes, professional escapists, espionage agents, or military commandos given missions regular soldiers know better than to accept.

Includes the daredevil base class, four anachronistic archetypes(escapist, masked adventurer, secret agent, and occultist), and rules for ritual magic!

Finally a signature ability at first level! Don't suppose the investigator and the enforcer could get a similar treatment sometime in the future? I really feel like each of them are missing a signature ability like dauntless surge.

Actually, they are very likely to get minor rewrites that end up looking a lot like the daredevil.

I have only got a chance to glance at it, but I would be happy if such rewrites happen for the investigator, and the enforcer.

I have a question about dauntless surge. Shouldn't it be available as a swift OR immediate action? Swift actions are only possible on your turn though they share a sort of 'slot' with immediate actions, only immediate actions could be used for the vast majority of saving throws which is one of the things a dauntless surge can be used for.

That would make a lot more sense, or have swift uses for things that can be done on your turn and immediate for things such as making saves, initiative, and AC boosts. Just limit them to only being done once per turn.

Immediate actions are already limited to one per turn. They take up the same 'slot' as your next swift action.

I love the fact that the Masked Adventure Archetype works very well with the Daredevil, Enforcer, Investigator base classes and gave me ideas for each.

With just a few tweaks such as the issue with the bonus feats, and the action types with Dauntless Surge this could be the best of the Anachronistic Adventurers line, and could stand side by side with the Godling Books and Time Thief/Warden books.

A couple of Anachronistic Bullet Points and I'd be all over them.

Now with the Mangani, Vanara, and Wukong I can use the Anachronistic Adventurer Line to run my Planet of Apes Game :)

I gave this a more thorough read and I am really pleased. If the enforcer and investigator get the same treatment, I think that would be a great start of an urban fantasy campaign. Particularly with my homebrew wealth rules. Essentially almost all wealth[read: magic items] is replaced by in character bonuses you get as you level up, including a 'free' super genius archetype.

Combining that and the 4 archetype products with the 3 anachronistic adventures products and you have the basis for a whole mess of character concepts.

Is there any chance in the pipeline for actual anachronistic adventure? As in something akin to the one night stands?

Not until I have all my classes out, and I have 2 or 3 more. (I'm honestly not sure if I need a Mastermind, with how I did the investigator, and I'm not sure if I need a Diplomat, with the way I did the Daredevil. But the ideas and names are constantly morphing, and I know I have at least 2 more classes to go).

After that, anything is possible, including maybe blending Anachronistic Adventurers and Forbidden Kingdoms.

Nice. So far I'm looking at adding the Masked Adventurer to the Investigator, for an adventurer that uses his mind more than muscle. Just need to look at a few feats and such. Any chance at an Anachronistic Bullet Point for things such as Extra Talents and such.

I suspect the masked adventurer is going to get slapped on all the existing anachronistic classes fairly often -- I have no trouble seeing it on an enforcer, daredevil, or investigator, for three very different masked adventurers. :)

Absolutely within the realm of possibility.

On an at best semi-related note, since it's specifically been stated as acceptable to Paizo to link to reviews elsewhere (even other places the product is sold), Anachronistic Adventurers: The Daredevil picks up a 5/5 review on DriveThruRPG. Quote from the review: "In the end, the Daredevil PDF does all that it intended to do. Yet another fine and worthwhile purchase from Super Genius Games."

I agree, i mean, masked investigator...thats about as prevalent as well...batman. Infact it seems to me batman would be suited as a mix of all 3.

And I would welcome an anachronistic bullet point.

I also have a specific question related to the eventual closing of dungeon a day. If a product gets an update (like mentioned above for enforcer and investigator) after dungeon a day closes up shop, will there be an avenue for previous subscribers to get the update elsewhere?

Yes. We're not sure on the details yet, but we have a few options and we'll settle on one when/if we close shop.

Whew, that's good to hear. I was having the same worries as Kolokotroni.

Don't worry, we'll take care of you. If you folks aren't satisfied with whatever solution we end up with, just drop me a PM. Without happy fans, we don't have a company!

I really enjoy this whole line of PDF's. They're fun to read; and I get so much inspiration for NPCs from them. Not to mention my players are finally willing to read my iPad to learn about them, after seeing this one. :)
