Gift items - needed? Unbalancing?

Does having Lorrimor leave an additional level appropriate item with the Judge in addition to the platinum or having a certain esoteric organsation gift an item to the players feel wrong or unbalancing? Is it needed?

There where quite some discussions about that CC was a bit short on treasure.
As for my Campain I had my PC's "earn" their extra stuff by fighting off an Assassin attack when they came back to Lepidstadt after TotB and before they ventured off into the Shudderwoods. I used the Rival Guide and then downgraded the Ustalav Party to the PC's level. Its quite a good fight and has THE classic invisible men in it.....

As for gifting...your the GM and you make the rules and create your Ustalav. If you feel thats a good idea go for it. It may be a pressent to bind them more to the order.

I've been pretty generous with my PCs. I used a 15 point build, which I know is the recommended build, but the AP still seems really tough to me. Not so much HoH, but I think the second half of ToTB and beyond seem really tough, especially if the PCs are not super strategic and rule masters. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my impression. Anyhow, I had the Professor bequeath relics to each of the PCs which are weapons that gain new abilities as the PCs gain levels (a new ability every few levels). I got the idea from a 3rd party pdf "Legendary Weapons." Anyhow, I may come to regret it, but the players love it and I still think they are going to have a hard time down the road. And it will be fun to see how the legendary weapon idea plays out.
