Attack Penalty When Using Shield

Rules Questions

I'm building some NPC's in HeroLab and the character generator is applying a -1 penalty to attacks using the main/weapon hand when a shield or a buckler is being used. I've looked through the rules and the only instance I can find is that using a buckler with a two-handed weapon results in a -1 attack penalty.

Is there something I'm missing or is it a bug in HeroLab?

Cheers,
Geo

Sounds buggy.

If you are using a one-handed weapon with two hands then it will be counted as a two-handed weapon.

As an example if you have longsword it will have to boxes. If you check both of them that is telling herolab you are using it two-handed.

I'm thinking it is a bug.

I double-checked, per your suggestion wraithstrike, and I only have the one box checked. It's also apply the penalty to unarmed strike.

I just installed an update so it could be a recent bug.

Is shield proficiency available for your NPC?

I don't have that issue. I just checked. What class are you using?

This. If your character doesn't have shield proficiency they take a negative to attacks.

PRD - Core - Equipment wrote:
Nonproficient with Armor Worn: A character who wears armor and/or uses a shield with which he is not proficient takes the armor's (and/or shield's) armor check penalty on attack rolls as well as on all Dexterity- and Strength-based ability and skill checks. The penalty for nonproficiency with armor stacks with the penalty for shields.

Another possibility: Is your character using weapon finesse? Weapon finesse takes a penalty equal to your AC penalty from shields.

This is also a good observation. Good catch.

Mergy - It is the weapon finess - thanks!

And thank-you to everyone else, I appreciate you taking the time to help.

Make it a masterwork buckler and it'll work out then. Glad I could help.

Mergy - I'm starting to suspect that you're a bit dangerous.

The rules are there to be used. :P
