Good Campaign Idea? Return of a Dwarven High King / Retaking of Koldukar "Urgir"

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

I'm looking for opinions on an idea I have for a campaign.

It has two goals, the return of a Dwarven High King & the retaking of the Sky Citadel Koldukar "Urgir" from the orcs.

I plan for the all or almost all of the PC's to be dwarves.

The odd aspect to this campaign is it will only consist of 4 sessions. :-P

My plan is to run it as a series of connected Con games over the next 3-4 years at my local Con. So each session would be a snap shot of the overall campaign vs playing the entire thing out. I would run 1 a year the first two years and possibly sessions 3 & 4 the third year if I can make it work.

The core 3-4 characters would be in all the adventures with a couple changing depending on player choices.

Does this sound interesting or doable in any reasonable fashion, or am I just nuts?

Thanks for sharing.

The campaign concept is a fantasy classic, of course (re: the retaking of Moria), though I've never seen it run. It will be interesting now because dwarves can fill any class they want, vs. in 1e/2e where they were more limited.

As far as the Con aspect, I've never run at Con, but if you're pretty sure you'll have at least some of the same players, it should work.

But you really would need to have the same players, or at least, they would only enjoy the overarching story if they had played in multiple sessions. Otherwise, the story is just there for your pleasure.

Be warned that timing could lead to issue in during the spring urgir is on the flood road so a siege camp might have to move when snowmelt starts coming down. Story porblem might be where are you getting all of these dwarves and where do they come from? Not sure how well running it at a con will work though.

Thanks for the feedback.

I do hope to get returning players, and having attended the Con I will be running the games at for over 20 years I know that many people come back every year. I have some plans to make it easier for returning players to get in to the later sessions.

I also plan to include write ups with the characters that tell what they have done in the past sessions as well as a little info on the time in between sessions / levels.

I plan to do the first session with the characters around 5th level and it will be during the last act that the big picture /destiny of the PC's will be revealed.

dotor_wu - thanks for the idea about the flooding, I might have to try and have some fun with that.

I think, if I can plan it right it will be easier to run as a Con game vs a normal campaign as I will more or less be setting the PC's at the beginning of a specific quest/task and telling them do it. Versus having to try and get a group of players in a campaign to get their on their own. Not near as cool as a full campaign but I think it will be fun and maybe a little different for a Con game.

The upside of this Con is it is RPG focused and I can run up to a 12 hour session, which even with breaks would give a solid 10+ hours of play time.

I could see running this campaign concept at home. I agree with the sentiment that you would want a constant group of players to really get the most enjoyment out of it.

This does sounds like an interesting campaign.
