Time Thief, balanced?

Product Discussion

A player in one of my games is interested in playing a time thief (from super genius games).
I gave the class a quick read on the srd site.
It seems... wonky. Certainly interesting though.

What does everyone think of this unusual 3pp class?
I'm particularly interested in playtest experiences, but welcome all opinions.

Thanks in advance.

Flagged for being in the wrong forum, should be in Compatible Products (I think).

My short opinion: Yes.

My long opinion: Yes it is.

My super long opinion: Yes it is, however since it is *completely* dependent on the motes, a long adventuring day will leave them fairly weak as they have little to go for them other than those motes.

In any event, the alchemist, summoner, and druid are far more powerful, so if you allow those in your game...

Thanks for the link and replies Cheapy.

I didn't really think it out performed the big three (cleric druid wizard). But the abilities are so strange that I wanted more opinions.

Thanks again

I just took my 6th level of time thief in a Kingmaker campaign. Combat was really rough the first couple of levels when I basically felt like an archer who could get one better than average shot per round. As I gained more temporal talents and more motes of time, the class came into its own. Level 4 and 5 were game changers, not in that I got ahead of the curve but in that I caught up.

The time thief shines as a skill monkey. In my case a social skill monkey, but it makes just as good a trap finder or scout.

I agree at 4th level I'm beginning to catch up with the rest of my group. I made mine a dervish dancer build and now he seems to be a good back up to the party Barbarian. He is also the trapfinder/face. I think when I hit fifth I'm taking Opportune Blow from the Time Thief/Warden Bullet Point. Levels 1-3 I was doing less damage than the Barbarian's Guard Dog. Still I love the flavor and dynamics of this class, one of my favorites.

I should say that I too really like the way the character plays. I'm mostly a warrior type of player so getting to feel like I have a touch of magic without having to worry about a spell list is appealing. I may not do OMG damage, but I consistently contribute to every battle.

It is, I ran one in a high level game and had not problems.

IMHO as a ENnie nominated professional game designer I think its the best new third party pathfinder class in existence, and truly wish paizo would incorporate it into an official product.

I think its so cool and balanced I designed two new classes based on its frame work (Taskshaper, and Luckbringer) new feats for it, so did its author Owen K.C. Stephens, Owen even made an addtional class with the Time Wardern.

My opinion is in the thread cheapy posted, but I will add here that I think the class is very well balanced the same way any resource intensive class is. The time thief works best if they have to manage their resources, if they can have a 15 minute workday, then like primary spell casters, or point heavy classes (magus, inquisitor, etc) they can be overpowered when compared to 'always on' classes like the fighter. If you dont let your players nova, AND you dont constantly force them to over extend (with lots more then the standard 3-4 encounters per day) then the time theif works great as a skill monkey and debuff kind of character. It is not a primary damage dealing combantant and cant take on that role with any kind of effectiveness. But it does have some spice damage abilities that can be used very infrequently like the 'entropy' ability.

I love entropy. d8 per class level ranged touch attack with the flavour of aging the cells of the target. I only get it once per day right now, but it's always a glorious once.
