Magic- usage

Rules Questions

Ok, so i'm coming from 4.0 where you have to roll for everything and there are no ref fort will saves

i know the basics of magic like how touch works but for the other types burst, cone, emination, ect. how do they function is there a roll or do they just hit and you have to make an appropriate save to avoid or reduce damage the core rule book isn't very clear on how they attack just what the area of affect looks like

In Pathfinder they just hit you, and you have to roll to reduce the amount of damage taken.

What they look like is on page 215 of the CRB(Core Rule Book).

For an area spell, you don't roll- it just goes off. Everyone caught in the area has to make a save (typically a reflex save, depending on what spell it is). Also, if the spell is a ranged spell and doesn't specify that it's a ray (it'll say Effect: Ray) then it also automatically happens, no roll needed on your end (though the target will, typically, roll a save).

If it's a touch spell or a ray spell, that means you make an attack roll against the target (ignoring any armor or natural armor bonuses). Tough and Ray spells rarely require saves, but that's not unheard of.

thanks
