Had an interesting effect happen in a game the other night and while the incident was resolved I was curious as to whether or not it should even be possible.
The party is fighting a creature possessed by a shadow/spirt/ghost what have you. The Wizard has Magic Jar and uses it to try and force the possessing spirit out and take the body for himself.
Now I ruled that it was the possessing spirit who had to resist not the host and if successful the spirit was cast out and the host swapped with the wizard.
Should it have been the spirit in the jar? or Both? Should I even have allowed it?..it did rather shorten an end game boss fight to three rounds.
thoughts?

I would have made a save for the subject of the possession and if it failed its soul would be in the jar and the wizards soul would be in the possessed creatures body with the ghost (i assume it was a ghost?). I would then have had the wizard make a save vs the ghosts possession ability, if he failed he'd be stuck with the ghost in the other guys body, if he passed he would force the ghost out.
If the wizard failed i would have then tried to kill his body while he was stuck in the spirits possessed body and had to watch, if the spirit was cast out i'd have tried to possess one of the party members asap.
I don't think you handled it badly though, its a tough encounter to run and its easy to overcome with prot evil anyway. If your players enjoyed the encounter and the wizard feels like he played smart then fair play.
