Ranger's Companion - Count for CR and XP?

Rules Questions

So I'm running a modified Kingmaker campaign and I'm having my group fight a ranger with an animal companion. It hit me that I have a couple of questions regarding it.

1. Does the animal companion count as a separate creature for totaling CR (i.e. a level 6 ranger is CR 5 and a leve 2 Wolf companion is a certain CR). If so, how do you figure out what CR the companion it?

2. Does killing the companion give the players XP in addition to killing the ranger or is it just considered part of the class function.

Thanks for any help.

Its just a class feature, regardless of whether it has an extra mini on the table or not.

The companion is already figured into the Ranger's CR.
