Familiar with Lay on Hands

Advice

I'm not sure, but this looks like the best familiar available. It's fast, smart and can do "Lay on hands" as a paladin of your caster level. Maybe I am missing something but for one feat, this sounds like a sweet deal.

Looks like a winner to me.

It's pretty rad, and I've seen it in a couple of witch builds (one of which was mine). It's very handy in a party with low-to-none combat healing, but has the downside of making your familiar a target in combat. And if a flying cat starting healing my enemies with "lay on paws", I'd probably start shooting at it too.

A silvanshee is probably the best improved familiar around, even without the lay on hands. Communicate with just about everything, good survivability with spectral mist and d-door, some of the best cantrips at will, and it can become freakishly strong for a minute each day. Plus, unless it's flying around and talking to people, it just looks like a cat with oddly violet eyes.

What makes you say that it can do Lay on Hands at your CL? The stat sheet for that creature states:

"lay on hands (1d6, 1/day, as a 2nd-level paladin)"

Lay on Hands is based off of Hit Dice(2 for the typical Silvanshee presented int eh book). Familiars use their masters Level as their Hit Dice.

Liberty's Edge

The stat sheet says, "as a 2nd-level paladin." Doesn't say anything about HD. Why would it go up because it's HD went up? As a GM, I would rule it stays at stated because the thing is already too OP for a Improved Familiar.

Because the Agathion subtype says it has Lay on Hands as paladin of level equal to it's Hit Dice?

Agathion Subtype.

Liberty's Edge

You got me. Man, that is too good. No NG spell caster should be without one.

Ah, there's the missing puzzle piece...

Searching the boards yields:

Familiar abilities and CL for HD

Technically, that should scale with HD, so as written, a wiz20's silvanshee improved familiar would have 7 uses of 10d6 LOH per day. Which is, of course, way too good. We're probably going to errata the silvanshee so the damage still scales up with HD but it remains capped at 1/day.

Ruyan.

I agree. Under normal conditions the 2HD creature would have the LOH ability of an L2 paladin. But the process of converting it to a familiar would trump that.

I hear the cries across the forums: you're gonna neuter my silvanshee? Really!? Yeah well, roll for init!

Wow, now I want one. As if I needed an excuse to have a kitty.

Move aside planned alchemist. I'm building me a witch next!

Take the Tumor Familiar discovery(in Ultimate Magic) and Improved Familiar for a really creepy Silvanshee familiar...

"Excuse me, are you in need of healing? You are? Well, let me just let my cat shaped tumor here separate itself from me and we'll get to work getting you back on your feet!"

Based on that developer feedback, it would be sensible to go ahead and set the number of number of charges/day to 1. Doing otherwise would be exploitative to a known spot where errata is needed.

That was my plan for when i make my first Viv. Alchemist.

Before getting Improved Familiar, he'd probably use a centipede tumor and us his ability to shoot it up with anthropromorphic animal so that it scurries around with human arms/hands and is able to speak.

I <3 creepy alchemists.

Just an FYI for perfectionists: Since most abilities are shown in title case for capitalization, "Lay On Hands" is proper. Normally a preposition (such as "on") would not be capitalized, but here it is part of a verb phrase in which all components are capitalized. That is all.

My halfling witch is going to upgrade his cat to a silvanshee next level. Can't wait. :)

I still stand by my small air elemental. Whirlwind that scales with the caster level is pretty impressive for boosting battlefield control.

Sounds like a good way for the Patron to talk to your witch. Or for the cat to make you think that is what is happening.

Where does it list these as available familiars?

Bestiary 2, Silvanshee

Also in Ultimate Magic in the Appendix.

If I took one, I'd have to name it Graymalkin...
