Avsig Longthews house is protected by a ring of lion posts that summon a lion protector if someone passes between them or attacks them. This includes the main road to his house which is presumably how the guides assistant went to speak to him. I'd have thought she'd have been attacked unless she knew the symbol in which case she could give it to the PC's.
I'm just a little curious as to how other people handled this? Personally I'm inclined to have it as follows . . .
The gap between the two posts by the road can be deactivated or activated by use of certain trigger runes on the posts themselves. Normally Avsig has this smaller gap open for anyone to cross so legitimate traders and the like can visit him without learning the secret to bypassing his defenses. However at all times when its deactivated there are 3-4 guards positioned in the roadway to intercept and insure that guests go to their appointed location. If a trader shows up one guard goes to alert him while the other three wait with them outside the fence posts with one right by a post ready to hit the activate rune in case they fall the house is still defended. On nights like this when no one other than those in the know should be showing up the road is unattended but the gap is closed and the posts activated.
Complex I know but it addresses the issue that concerns me, still I'm wondering how others dealt with it or if it just didn't come up?

My verdict on this went this way: During the day there are gaurds at the entrances who deactivate the posts or stop anyone from crossing. At night there are 2 methods of preventing attack 1. drawing the rune in the dirt and 2. wearing the lion armband that marks you as a liege man of longthews. A person wearing the armband activates the trap but the lions won't attack unless ordered to by their master or if the person wearing the armband attacks them or another wearing an armband.
