Which races do you allow for player characters and why?

I tend to think elves in a very tokienesque sense, deep sense of history great warriors immortal almost angelic. I think of gnomes as think of them are more like Santa's elves or the showmaker's elves. Elves are galelic "green men" gnomes are leprechans.


Just curious, am I the only one who makes the different "races" of human like races just that; races of of humans. I had a hard time justifying why they were just like humans with hats and could breed with humans otherwise.

You really need to search for more published and homebrew settings: that's the most common choice after "standard Tolkein-esque".

I do in fact do this. I have eight different human races, and elves and dwarves are among them.
